Albertans, on the other hand, are still in the Dark Ages

CALGARY — Nearly one in 10 Alberta men believes it’s OK to physically assault a woman if she does something to make him angry.

That’s one of the startling findings of a recent survey examining men’s attitudes toward domestic violence. And while the survey results indicate awareness about domestic violence is on the rise in Alberta, it also makes it clear the province still has a long way to go.

The telephone survey, conducted in February by Leger Marketing, quizzed 1,000 Alberta men about their attitudes on gender equity and domestic violence.

The results of the survey were released in Calgary Monday, when the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters (ACWS) hosted its annual “Breakfast With the Guys” fundraiser, an event aimed at empowering men and boys to take a stand against domestic violence.

ACWS provincial co-ordinator Jan Reimer said she has “mixed emotions” about the information brought to light by the survey.

On the one hand, some of the responses are cause for optimism — for example, 56 per cent of men say they are more aware of domestic violence issues than they were five years ago, and 91 per cent say they would intervene if they knew someone in a violent relationship.

Some of the other results, however, are more disturbing. Fifty-two per cent of men surveyed said they believe a woman can leave a violent relationship if she really wants to, while only 52 per cent disagreed with the statement, “If a woman wears provocative clothing, she’s putting herself at risk for rape.”

Thirteen per cent of the survey respondents said domestic violence is not as serious if it results from people getting so angry they temporarily lose control. And eight per cent, nearly one in 10 of the men surveyed, did not agree that it’s never acceptable to physically assault a woman if she did something to incite the anger.

So the point is that any enlightened respondent would "agree that it's never acceptable to physically assault a woman if she did something to incite the anger."

Never.

Even if she assaulted the man first. Even if she is threatening an assault and has a weapon in hand. Even if she is like my late mother-in-law.

Survey is bullshit, intended to elicit an inflammatory result.

If someone assaults you first, or is about to assault you with a weapon, then whatever is done in retaliation is not assault, it is self-defence, so your question is meaningless.

Some folks may not have understood that distinction, which could have inflated the percentage. (Also, there's probably another percentage in that figure who responded "yes" as a joke because they thought it was a ridiculous question.)

I agree that this survey could have been worded better.

The pivotal primaries in Alabama and Mississippi come as a new poll appears to prove just how non-progressive some GOP voters in the region are.

An astonishing 29 per cent of Republican voters in Mississippi believe that interracial marriage should be illegal.

This number falls to a still significant 21 per cent among self-declared GOP supporters in Alabama, according to the survey by Public Police Polling.

In Mississippi, 54 per cent said they were in favour of mixed-race marriage, a figure that increased to 67 per cent in Alabama.

Interracial marriage has been legal across the U.S. since June 1967, when a Supreme Court ruling banned anti-miscegenation laws then enforced in 16 states.

Speaking of Mississippi, 85% believe Obama is, or could be, a Muslim.

I suspect that 1 in 10 is a low percentage compared to 3rd world countries or the Red States in the U.S.A.

Are all of you too stupid to recognize a poll that is slanted to elicit an outrageous result?

Jesus.

Question: Do you believe that Our Beloved President, Barak Hussein Obama, is OR COULD BE a Muslim?

Why is it not 100% affirmative? Surely, this is the correct answer to the question.

Question: Do you believe that Vice President Joe Biden is or could be a complete fucking moron?

The answer is obvious.

The obvious answer is that you don't like the results of the poll so obviously the question must have been confusing to people. Because that beats the alternative, that a lot of people are not well informed about basic information.
