American politics, a non stop source of laffs!

The Obama campaign apparently didn't look backwards into history when selecting its new campaign slogan, "Forward" — a word with a long and rich association with European Marxism.

Many Communist and radical publications and entities throughout the 19th and 20th centuries had the name "Forward!" or its foreign cognates. Wikipedia has an entire section called "Forward (generic name of socialist publications)."

"The name Forward carries a special meaning in socialist political terminology. It has been frequently used as a name for socialist, communist and other left-wing newspapers and publications," the online encyclopedia explains.

The slogan "Forward!" reflected the conviction of European Marxists and radicals that their movements reflected the march of history, which would move forward past capitalism and into socialism and communism.

The Obama campaign released its new campaign slogan Monday in a 7-minute video. The title card has simply the word "Forward" with the "O" having the familiar Obama logo from 2008. It will be played at rallies this weekend that mark the Obama re-election campaign's official beginning.

Sums "it" up rather nicely.

I have to ask, why is the "socialist/ism bogeyman"* still such a part of US politics? Surely the living in the "Land of the Free"(tm) should include the freedom to hold left of centre views.** Why does the American right always resort to such childish/like attacks?

* I have little doubt that 90% of the US population who fear "socialism" do not have a scintilla of an idea of what "socialism" actually means.

**Or "centre right political" views as they are known in the rest of the world.

Or better still, those who deride socialism but have no compunction about taking advantage of the socialism that benefits them (largely owing to having no realization that it is socialism).

The left does the same (not saying it's correct, just saying both sides employ the same tactics)

Anyone can endorse whatever "side" they choose and therein lies the problem IMHO. That there are "sides" one is almost forced to choose from or to be associated with.

Personlly, I have views that run from conservative to liberal depending on the subject. Thus I remain independent (note the small "i", aka no party affiliation). ;)

ETA
And yes, I have used some of those "socialist" programs, mainly public schooling (which is mostly paid for by my property taxes) unemployment and rehab.

I'm sure they do, maybe it's the bias we see in the UK/Aus press, or the fact that right wing American whack jobs seem to be SO overtly OTT in their lunacy from a foreign perspective.

Ditto. I run from hard left to hard right in UK/Aus political perspectives, or from hard left to Communist in American political perspectives!
