...for Obama:
NORFOLK, Va. -- Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has picked Congressman Paul Ryan as his vice presidential running mate and will announce the pick on Saturday, a Republican official said.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Romney would announce Ryan as his choice at an event in Norfolk.
Romney is to say who will join him on the ticket at an event in Norfolk at about 9 a.m. EDT/1300 GMT, ending a months-long search for a running mate to face President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden in the Nov. 6 election.
The Romney campaign has been working from a short list of candidates that included Ryan, 42, a Wisconsin lawmaker who chairs the House of Representatives Budget Committee, Ohio Senator Rob Portman and former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty.
The Tea Party crowd goaded him into it, and he dutifully obeyed. This is the Democratic dream ticket.

I like Paul Ryan, he's very bright, personable, and articulate...(he's not a doctrinaire "tea partier" he represents a purple swing district, and wins it by wide margins)
But if this report is accurate, (and I'm seeing some confirmations) I think it's a huge mistake....
It makes the Ryan Budget Plan the centerpiece of the campaign, and there are many aspects to that plan that, regardless of whether or not they make budgetary sense , represent poison pills politically that the Obama campaign will exploit to the hilt....
There's no one Romney could pick who would give Team Obama more ammunition to use to try to turn the focus of the campaign from the condition of the economy than Ryan....
The Obama campaign has been desperately casting about for some way to get voters to focus on something, anything other than the economy, and Romney appears to have handed it to them on a silver platter....
We're going to see commercials run 24/7 from now till election day in every swing state hammering away at how much money that state will lose in federal funding under The Ryan Budget Plan....
Which will now of course, become The Romney Budget Plan....
I am at a complete loss to understand the reasoning behind this decision...
BUSH-CHRISTIE 2016!

Essentially the same reason McCain went with Palin in 2008, to appease a certain segment of the party and motivate them enough to get behind a candidate for whom their enthusiasm has been lukewarm at best. But...Florida is gone for sure, as are probably a few more swing states that might have been in play.

If he chose Ryan to motivate the base, it was pointless...
The Kenyan Muslim Socialist President does that....
He maybe shaves a couple of points in Wisconsin, but not enough to bring in the state....
He creates huge problems in Florida, and any other state with a lot of retirees...(like Arizona)
It will be impossible to paint Ryan as scary in some way personally, (because he isn't) but that wont be necessary, because his plan will be portrayed that way....
Romney would have been better off going with MCDonnell; at least that pick might have delivered Virginia....

here's his work experience...
Graduating from Joseph A. Craig High School in Janesville in 1988, Ryan was voted prom king and "Biggest Brown-Noser" by his fellow classmates.
In college, he briefly worked for Oscar Mayer as a Wienermobile driver. He also returned to Camp Manito-wish YMCA, working as a staff member and counselor during his college summer vacations. Ryan went on to graduate from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, with a BA in economics and political science in 1992. He also studied at the Washington Semester program at American University and was a member of the Delta Tau Delta social fraternity.
Following his studies, Ryan briefly returned to Wisconsin and worked as a marketing consultant for an earth-moving company run by his relatives.
How many trees do republicans have to shake before their candidate drops out?

Here's the AP scoop...
Romney names Paul Ryan his No. 2
KASIE HUNT, Associated Press
Updated 7:42 a.m., Saturday, August 11, 2012
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney introduced Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as his vice presidential running mate on Saturday, turning to the architect of a deeply conservative and intensely controversial long-term budget plan to remake Medicare and cut trillions in federal spending.
In the campaign to come, Republicans will present economic solutions "that are bold, specific and achievable," Romney said as he presented his political partner. "We offer our commitment to create 12 million new jobs and bring better take home pay to middle class families."
The two men basked in the cheers of supporters in their made-for-television debut on a ticket hoping to make President Barack Obama's first term his last. "I did not make a mistake with this guy," Romney exulted.
"I am deeply excited and honored to join you as your running mate," Ryan said in his first words at the podium." He said that together, Republicans would eliminate the country's "debt, doubt and despair."
He said that "Regrettably, President Obama has become part of the problem, and Mitt Romney is the solution" to an economy that has yet to make a strong recovery from the worst recession in decades.
The ticket made its debut at a naval museum in Norfolk, Va., the initial stop of a bus tour through four battleground states in as many days. The USS Wisconsin, berthed at the museum, was their bunting-draped backdrop, a symbol of the nation's military strength as well as an obvious reference to Ryan's home state.
First Romney, then Ryan, a generation younger than his patron, jogged down the ship's gangplank to the cheers of hundreds and the stirring soundtrack from the movie "Air Force One."
As his family came on stage, Ryan knelt to embrace his daughter and two sons before kissing his wife.
While word of Ryan's selection leaked late Friday night and was posted by the campaign to its phone app before the speeches, Obama's campaign withheld its reaction until the Republicans had spoken.
"The architect of the radical Republican House budget, Ryan, like Romney, proposed an additional $250,000 tax cut for millionaires, and deep cuts in education from Head Start to college aid," Jim Messina, the president's campaign manager, said in a written statement.
"His plan would also end Medicare as we know it by turning it into a voucher system, shifting thousands of dollars in health care costs to seniors," he said.
Ryan's selection — as well as Romney's own nomination — will be ratified by delegates to the Republican National Convention that begins on Aug. 27 in Tampa, Fla.
Obama and Vice President Joseph Biden will be nominated for a second term at the Democratic convention the following week.
One campaign official said Romney settled on Ryan on Aug. 1, more than a week ago, and informed Beth Myers, the longtime aide who had shepherded the secretive process that led to the selection. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to provide details.
It was not known when Romney informed Ryan he wanted him on the ticket.
In making his pick, Romney bypassed other potential running mates, including Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell.
Officials said he had called all four to notify them of his decision.
There was one unscripted moment, when Romney mistakenly introduced Ryan as the next president. He returned to the podium to say, "Every now and then I'm known to make a mistake. I didn't make a mistake with this guy. But I can tell you this, he is going to be the next vice president of the United States."
At 42, Ryan is a more than two decades younger than the 65-year-old Romney.
His conservative credentials are highly regarded by fellow Republican House members, while numerous polls during the primaries of winter and spring found that Romney's credentials were suspect among the party's core supporters.

Ryan as Caspar Milquetoast's VP running mate is a "too safe" choice and will prove to do absolutely nothing to excite the 8% out there who are supposedly "sitting on the fence." This move has not gained even one extra electoral vote. As the game hucksters say at the carney, "close, but no cigar."
The most enthusiasm for Ryan came from the White House.

Just about all of what I'm hearing and reading about Paul Ryan is negative.
I haven't read anything from Limbaugh or Hannity yet, who will no doubt say it was a genius move by Romney. Of course, they would claim it was a genius move if Romney picked Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Hey, the man's sole independent work experience was driving a "Weinermoblile", he can't be all bad...
Does anyone really believe that "privatising" Medicare and Social Security, giving senior citizens vouchers and allowing them to choose private medical insurance and cash in a pensions account, will actually do ANYTHING?

listened to the formal announcement today and I can say I see why it seems like a good I dea he doesn't come across as the type of person who would come up with his budget plan. That is he talks a good moderate.

Rand's body has helped draw political support from GOP-ers like Texas Representative Kevin Brady, who are impressed with his physical prowess over the years. "When I saw Paul Ryan—man, he's gotten in great shape," Brady told Politico in 2009. "He doesn't have a six-pack; he's got, like, a 12-pack." If that's not reason enough for a place on the presidential ticket, what is?

Just to cheer Dave up...
So it elevates the tone of debate, but it will be slightly weird to have a
VP pick who is more interesting than the candidate, and whose ideas are the ones being debated. Of course t
hat happened with Sarah Palin, but not in a good way.
So is this a game changer? Can it help Mitt Romney win a race where he is lagging a little behind?
Paul Ryan is not all positive.
He has no foreign policy experience, hardly any history outside politics (he was elected at 28) and may not be seen as ready to become commander-in-chief if something should happen to President Romney.

I don't know if selecting Ryan is good or bad politics, but it's not good that one of the few adults in D.C. is not going to be in a position of power any longer. Ryan was making some headway in getting others, from both sides of the aisle, to actually face up to the impending budget implosion and develop policies to make a difference. Now, he's either out of office or just as hidden as Vice President.
But for anyone questioning his experience -- just compare his accomplishments and reputation as a legislator with those of the current POTUS before he was elected. Based on what I've seen of him, Ryan is easily the smartest and most qualified of any of the four guys on the two tickets.

Long Run, as I thought was the case, like Joe Lieberman and Lloyd Benson before him, Ryan will continue to stand for his seat in Congress while he runs for VP.
Although Mitt Romney named him his running mate Saturday, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., is still seeking reelection to his House seat in November, according to Ryan’s House campaign manager, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
Ryan can run for both his House seat and vice president thanks to a 1968 Wisconsin law. He faces Democrat Rob Zerban, who has raised only about one-quarter of the amount of money Ryan has raised, as of July 25.
If he wins both elections in November, a special election, probably held in the spring, will be required to fill his House seat, according to the Kenosha News. If this happens, who might run for the seat is up in the air, though there has been talk, Kenosha County Republican Party Chairman Matt Augustine said. “All I know is the Republicans have been looking for a while just in case this happened,” he said.

Ryan thinks that the economic policies which caused the worst economic stagnation since WWII (the bottom 80% of households made less money in 2008 than 2001 after Clinton the Wise) are worth repeating.
Only a jackass would do that again.

Now that the dust has settled, this has proven to be not only an intelligent pick but a politically astute one.
Despite the blatant attempts by the Non-Fox Media over the past several days to paint Ryan as Lucifer or Freddie Kruger, the public can see for itself that he is a handsome, articulate, serious candidate - far superior to some of the others whose names were bandied about.
Ryan will give the ticket policy bona fides that no other candidate brought to the table, and he promises to mop the floor with the walking punch line who sits on the bottom of the Democrat ticket (who, if memory serves, was unaware last time around that the VP is President of the Senate), at the inevitable VP debate.
UNfortunately for the Dems, Ryan will move the political dialog away from nonsense like Bain Capital, Mitt's tax returns and Ann Romney's horse to the real issues - and they can't win on the real issues.
It is ironic and funny when one reads bullshit like above, casting aspersions on Ryan's background. Here is someone who has accomplished great things in office and proven himself as a valuable public servant. As conrasted with the jerk who sits in the Oval Office, who never accomplished anything in his life outside of academe (and his academic accomplishments are VERY doubtful), and was a non-entity in the only elected offices he held prior to the Presidency.
Let the party begin.

If the Republicans have any intentions of reducing or eliminating SS, Medicaid or Medicare it is over for a Republican presidency. We Americans love our freedom, but we don’t want to be a third world country either.

Translation: I'm going to prop up a nice little strawman so I don't have to respond to anything they actually brought up.

Let's see how wanting to kill SS and Medicare plays with the canasta set in Florida and elsewhere.
