Debate Reverse Trash Talk....

This was kind of funny to see last week....

For months now, the spinners and surrogates of the two campaigns have said everything they could to build their candidate up and tear the opponent down....

Until last week, when the topic focused on who should be expected to perform better in the upcoming debate....

In an effort to lower the bar in the expectations game for their candidate, the minions on both sides have fallen all over themselves being effusive in their praise of the other guy's debating skills, and poor mouthing and downplaying their candidate's talents....

It's as though they all suddenly switched jerseys and started playing for the other team....

The Obama folks have been all over the tube saying things like, "Well, Mitt Romney has to clearly be considered the favorite in terms of who should be expected to have the best debate performance, since he's had so much recent experience."

And Team Romney counters with, "Oh no, Obama has to be expected to be the top performer, given his great oratorical skills, and his experience in one on one Presidential debates."

Gee, it's such a refreshing change to see this sudden outburst of appreciation for the abilities of the opposition candidate...Such atypical graciousness.... 8-)

They want to try to raise the expectation bar as high as they can for the opponent...

And of course, so long as their candidate doesn't come out and stumble over his own feet, stutter like Porky Pig and blow his nose on his tie, he should be seen as performing far better than expected....

It's amusing, and also incredibly disingenuous....

The fact of the matter is that both of these guys are skilled debate performers, and there's no reason to think either is going to greatly outshine the other; it's very unlikely either will fall on his face or score a devastating pivitol moment over the other....

The greatest likelihood is that these debates will be pretty much a draw, close enough for both sides to claim victory, and change very few minds...

And of course, a tie works to the advantage of whoever's ahead...

Which happens to be Obama...

Considering Romney's campaign performance to date, none of those would surprise me.

The other night David Letterman said they're having three debates...

1) Domestic Policy
2) Foreign Policy
3) How Dogs look like their owners

Romney might have some experience in the third one so he may have a chance to score some points.

Nonsense. Romney would never let his hair look like he had been strapped to the roof of a car for a long trip.

Honestly, I'm glad I'm already booked every night next week. I could actually care less about these debates.

... and ten$ of million of dollar$ being wasted for a piece of that 8% of the voters that you alluded to last month, a segment of the electorate fringe factor that shouldn't be voting anyway.

You say, "The greatest likelihood is that these debates will be pretty much a draw, close enough for both sides to claim victory, and change very few minds... And of course, a tie works to the advantage of whoever's ahead... Which happens to be Obama..."

Who wins, who loses these debates -- it just doesn't matter at this juncture. Even if Romney somehow garners 65% of the vote from these "undeciders" he is STILL sure to miss out on his bid for CinC.

I can't wait for these debates and his next gaff. Romney... comedy that writes itself.

Bob McDonnell/Marco Rubio... 2020

These are taken from David Letterman's list of "Top 10 Signs You're Losing the Presidential Debate" (They're from the '92 election, but I think they hold up)
After every statement you make, moderator chuckles and says, "Whoops!"

In audience, your father tears his clothing and yells, "I have no son!"

Only mild, polite applause when you B.S. about how much you love America.

Cameraman peeks around camera and mouths the words, "You suck."

Doberman in audience smells your fear and starts chasing you around podium.

Michael Dukakis is sitting in the front row, giving you a "thumbs up".
Should any of these things happen on Wednesday, (especially the last one) I think it will be a clear indicator as to who lost the debate....
