U.S. Calvinistic prudishness claims another casualty:

CIA Director David Petraeus resigned his post as head of America’s leading spy agency on Friday, saying he had engaged in an extramarital affair and acknowledging that he “showed extremely poor judgment.”

In a letter to the CIA work force, Petraeus, 60, said that he met with President Barack Obama at the White House on Thursday and asked “to be allowed, for personal reasons, to resign from my position.”

“After being married for 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair,” he wrote. “Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours.”

So he had an affair, so fucking what? How does it compromise his ability to do his job? If he was vulnerable to blackmail, that threat ended the moment he told all.

I believe that betraying another person and breaking promises is evidence of untrustworthiness. It may be par for the course for some and hence unremarkable.

We are lucky to have had such a perceptive leader that ultimately realized his shortcomings.

Ok, I see now. He didn't disclose the affair of his own volition, it was discovered by the FBI. So he was keeping it a secret, and it could have exposed him to blackmail. Different kettle of fish.

It is a great tragedy that a man who was the greatest military mind of his generation, should go out this way....

It really is a tragedy...

Regardless of what one might think of the wisdom of the war in Iraq or Afghanistan, there is no question but that a lot more young guys are alive today because General Petraus was put in charge...

What a horrible thing...I don't know where to begin with this...

I see no difference between what Scooter said and what Rube said.

I don't care who he was sleeping with either, but if doing it in secret put him and the CIA in a vulnerable position, then yes, he's done for. Which is a moot point, because the Pres did accept his resignation after all.

It's a double standard; I have one set of rules for how I deal with prize assholes, and another for how I deal with everyone else...

She is surely a 'CIA-lis' kind of woman. (Is one enough, is three too many?) Sometimes homemade cookies, pies, and dumplings are not the way to a man's, eh, heart. When you're a virile, sixty year old, type-A, military, kind of guy like Petraeus, and your spouse is busy making snickerdoodles for the neighborhood kaffeeklatsch, well, sex under a desk might easily create a grey cloud over his "I do, Holly" and quickly turn it into a "Do me, Paula" moment. Hey, shit happens.

Fortunately, General Petraeus is one of the few men who no doubt has an easy out on such kinky infidelity by blaming it on "the fog of war." Even more fortunate, Mrs. P. appears to be a "stand by your man" kind of woman. Nonetheless, he must now deal with the consequences of his actions. He and Bill Clinton might have a little chat in the near future.

The backlash of this scandal will now have the neo-cons somehow blaming this on Obama and demanding his resignation. Their assertion will be that Obama surely had knowledge of this affair prior to his appointment of Petraeus to the CIA -- so he's just as culpable. It won't be long before Red Congress introduces a resolution to censure or impeach him.

That title just won the Benny Hill award.

For the record, I also think his resignation was appropriate....

But that doesn't make it any less sad....

What it looks like is a younger woman infatuated with an older, accomplished man...

And that man responding....

It's a story as old as time itself, and ordinarily it wouldn't amount to much....

But when the man in question is Director of The Central Intelligence Agency, he has to go....
