Conservative Liberal Democratic Party?

After I read
this article's headline and found out what the 'LDP' stands for, my brain froze and I've been unable to function since.
Can somebody who is more knowledgeable about politics (everybody here) explain how that can be?
(Edited because I misspelled LDP)

They probably mean "liberal" in the classical sense - free markets, limited government, individual liberty, etc.
There was a Liberal Party in Italy for the greater part of the postwar period that was the most right-wing of all the major parties except the neo-fascists. I'm sure there are examples in other countries as well.

LDL means "lower detection limit".
LDP means "Liberal Democratic Party".
I didn't see anything shocking in that article. Or even slightly surprising. What upset you?

I'm not upset. Just wondering how a party can be liberal & conservative at the same time.
In my mind it's like seeing a reference to a NAACP/KKK group.

What Scooter said.
Also, even in the American sense of the word, "liberal" is more conservative than "socialist" or "communist".

In the UK the Liberal Democrats have formed a coalition government with the Conservatives for the past two years.
But you have to recall that 'conservatives' in all the rest of the G-20 are roughly where the center or center-right of the US Democratic party are. US conservatives have no parallel; they are sui generis. Total shrieking idiots.

The Liberal Party in Australia is the right of centre party.
We Believe...
In the inalienable rights and freedoms of all peoples; and we work towards a lean government that minimises interference in our daily lives; and maximises individual and private sector initiative
In government that nurtures and encourages its citizens through incentive, rather than putting limits on people through the punishing disincentives of burdensome taxes and the stifling structures of Labor's corporate state and bureaucratic red tape.
In those most basic freedoms of parliamentary democracy - the freedom of thought, worship, speech and association.
In a just and humane society in which the importance of the family and the role of law and justice is maintained.
In equal opportunity for all Australians; and the encouragement and facilitation of wealth so that all may enjoy the highest possible standards of living, health, education and social justice.
That, wherever possible, government should not compete with an efficient private sector; and that businesses and individuals - not government - are the true creators of wealth and employment.
In preserving Australia's natural beauty and the environment for future generations.
That our nation has a constructive role to play in maintaining world peace and democracy through alliance with other free nations.
In the UK the Liberal party, and the Liberal Democrat Parties are wishy washy non entities who would leap into bed with Stalin and Hitler for a threesome if it got them attention.
BTW, so sorry you got upset by reading that article Joe, want a hanky?

Japan was isolationist for a very long time, the desire to deal with outsiders was/is considered liberal...
