Where Are the Republicans America Once Could Love?

Post by Andrew D »

In this thread, an Oklahoma congressman voices the complaint so often voiced recently by sane Republicans:
What happened to the Republican Party that I joined?
What did happen to that party?

A mere 17 years ago, the Republican presidential nominee bragged about standing up for civil rights:
As President, Bob Dole will continue his strong commitment to protecting the civil rights of all Americans. During his career, he:
• Supported the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
• Voted for the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) of 1967. The act protects older employees and job applicants from age discrimination in employment. In 1990, Senator Dole supported the expansion and clarification of the ADEA to protect older workers from the loss of their employee benefit plans due to age discrimination.
• Played an instrumental role in extending the Voting Rights Act in 1982.
• Led the battle to pass the Americans with Disabilities Act, which is the first comprehensive federal law which protects individuals with disabilities from discrimination in employment, public services, transportation and telecommunications.

Bob Dole believes that we have made great strides to end discrimination in this country, but that we still have much work to do.
And he bragged about being an environmentalist:
Bob Dole is the only Presidential candidate ever to have voted for and help pass every major piece of environmental protection legislation in the past 25 years. He:
• Co-sponsored the Safe Drinking Water Act, which ensures healthy drinking water for all Americans.
• Played a key role in passing the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act.
• Led the Clean Air Act to passage, a law that fundamentally reformed the previous law and is recognized as one of the most sweeping environmental laws ever enacted.
• Played a significant role in amending the Federal Water Pollution Control Act in 1971 to help eliminate the discharge of pollutants into navigable waters and to ensure the integrity of the nation's water supply by uniting federal and state efforts.
What happened? Where are those Republicans now? Or, more accurately, why are they hiding?
Reason is valuable only when it performs against the wordless physical background of the universe.
