"
Lest we all forget, August 14, 1935 was the day HR 7260, The Social Security Act of 1935 passed into law, after a series of knock-down drag-out battles.

FDR: “If the Senate and the House of Representatives in this long and arduous session had done nothing more than pass this Security Bill, Social Security Act, the session would be regarded as historic for all time.”

And seventy-fives years later, it's still around, still bashed, still attacked, and still saving the majority of Americans hitting 65 ever since.

Lucky, no? "

......and will be insolvent by 2037.

A Ponzi scheme that is non-sustainable.

From the LA Times:

By 2037, the trust fund is projected to be empty. Whether it lasts more or fewer years, though, will depend on several variables, including the increase in lifespans, the growth in the economy and wages, and the rates of inflation, unemployment and immigration. The harder it is for new workers to enter the country and pay payroll taxes, the more quickly the trust fund will be depleted.

Open the flood gates to ALL immigrants?

Fully funded for 26 years in the future. If there are no changes the worst thing that can happen in 2036 is a 22% cut in benefits.

As I understand it.

When Social Security was instituted back in 1935 the average life span was shorter than it is now.

People are living into their 80's and beyond and sucking the system dry.

SS funds now cover a far wider and larger population ever envisioned by FDR's scheme.

(the handicapped for example)....not saying this is wrong, just underfunded.

My children and YOUR children are screwed not to mention my grandson. :x

not really once the boomers die the population will decline or at least even out proportionally leaving more money in the pot.

No, paying less money into Al's lockbox.

As I understand it, it takes a little over two workers to support some old geezer on SSI.

If our population shrinks, so will that ratio.

That depends on how the population shrinks. If proportionally more geezers than workers die, it will take fewer workers to support each geezer and keep the system running.
Reason is valuable only when it performs against the wordless physical background of the universe.

Maybe we should have programs promoting smoking, alcohol, and overeating to people at or near retirement age? Better yet, get them all to buy handguns, stir them up with some right-wing hate propaganda and let nature take its course.
