I always seem to have it...

I know the slots are considered a "suckers game" but I always seem to do well with them...

Whenever I go to Vegas or Reno, I play the dollar slots, and I give myself a $100 a day loss limit...

I only play machines that have all three of these aspects; a return your bet, (like a single cherry) a multiplier, and a wild...(a lot of the machines have two of those, but only a relatively small percentage have all three)

I've never come home from a three or four day stay more than a couple of hundred dollars down and usually I come home up at least three or four hundred...(on a couple of occasions I've done considerably better than that...Once I did so well I covered my entire vacation expense and came home with an extra 2 grand)
I love hearing suckers tell about their "winnings". It reaffirms my belief that there is an endless pool of suckers to be fleeced who will then lie about it.

Do the casinos still exist? Do they still put the slot machines out there to be played? Is it their game and their house?

How stupid are people?

I've been fortunate gambling also & still in the win column.

My most recent wager was that rubato would post something negative in this thread and call at least one person stupid.

Jim/oldr--I know people who routinely win at games (usually not big, but consistent), those who consistently lie about winning regardless of how they do (they worst they'll ever admit to is breaking even), and those who balance out the consistent winners and routinely lose (or would od so, I know I'm going to lose so I'll rarely play). Most of us are in the second or third group (that's how they can afford to build and run casinos), if you're in the first, all the better.

But Jim, re slots--do you really enjoy the play? There are no decisions; all you do is put in money and pull the handle/push the button. Is the only fun in winning, or is there some sort of fun in the repetitive motion?

My father in law regularly returns from a casino with more money than he arrived with. Note: NEVER play poker with my father in law!

I vaguely recall reading somewhere that most casino slots are set to break even...overall, the casino does not make (or lose) money on them.

Never won big, $50 here and there usually. Biggest prize I walked away with was $300. I never lose more than $150 a "day", that's my self imposed limit. If I'm down that, I walk away and wait til next time (the next day if we are staying over or the next trip).

I heard that slots are set above 95% to pay out but below 100% break even.

Had a GREAT time, really enjoyed the change of scene, had a great meal at Boomtown (wasn't able to hit seven lobsters...I really tried; still stuck at six...)

Lost about $50 over the three days at the slots, (went up and down, never claimed to win every time)

Oh well, then I'll go ahead and do it.... 8-)

Either rube does not understand the laws of statistical probability,(a very real possibility, given the impressive list of basic concepts rube has demonstrated he does not understand) and believes that because the laws of probability overall favor The House, that this means that every individual player must always be a net loser....

Or...

Rube has had some very bad personal experiences gambling, (probably also involving over consumption of alcohol) and he is venting his bitterness about that in his typical round about way, by attacking others....

Either explanation works, but in this case I would bet ( 8-) ) on Number 2....

One of the things I've learned about rube over the years is that while you can't take a lot of what he says at face value, (because it's completely contradicted by what he posts) if you read between the lines of what he says, a picture emerges...

In this case, if you take his derisive comments about Las Vegas, and put them together with his comments in this thread, it strongly suggests to me that rube (or someone close to him;a sibling or an in-law perhaps) has had some really bad experiences with gambling...

(The fact that he brings drinking into it suggests that it's most likely rube himself; we're all familiar with his history of problems with alcohol...)

Boomtown is just outside Reno, so a bit away from Tahoe. But, maybe Jim had a local lobster-like creature called a crawdad:

Though, you are probably right that they get their crustaceans shipped in from some southern or NE location.

Tangent Alert:

I have a lifelong dislike of gambling, and figuratively or literally roll my eyes when I read things like, "I'm still in the won column..."

A year or so ago at my wife's GS reunion (!) I met a guy who claimed to be TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS AHEAD over many months, playing a particular video poker machine at the local "Rivers Casino." Blah, blah, blah. Claimed he goes there a couple times a week and sometimes even calls in sick at work because he's winning so much and doesn't want to leave the machine. Right.

Shortly after this conversation I saw on the local news that the Rivers Casino had outraged many of its patrons by removing a particular video poker machine, which had been paying out excessive winnings since the casino opened a few years ago.

Unbelievable, but true.

He might want to try GA.

I'm surprised it took them that long. Usually payouts are tracked daily if not hourly.
