A INSCRIPTION that for more than 90 years misspelt the names of four Penzance brothers killed in the First World War has been corrected.
The war memorial by the Jubilee Pool wrongly showed Charles, Bertie, Sidney and Fred Rowe's surname as Row.
Then the error was spotted by the brothers' niece, Valerie Mallett from Camborne.
She contacted BBC Radio Cornwall; it called Penzance Town Council and in turn the council approached Major Bob Harrison, a retired Army officer from Mousehole who has spent several years researching the names on Penzance's Roll of Honour.
The inscription has now been corrected, with the missing Es being added by Victor Cowley of Longrock Memorials, who took the opportunity to do the same to the surnames of two unrelated Rowes which were also misspelt.
Major Harrison had confirmed the correct spelling from the 1911 census.
