At least two jihadis armed with a gun, knives and a suicide belt have wounded three tourists at the entrance of a hotel in an Egyptian Red Sea resort.
Security forces said the attackers arrived by sea to launch the onslaught on the beachside Bella Vista Hotel, in the Red Sea resort of Hurghada.
They claimed to have killed the attacker wearing the suicide bomb. opened fire at the two assailants, killing one and seriously wounding the other.
The other two men armed with knives entered the hotel’s outdoor restaurant at the front of the building and attacked the tourists.
The attackers were reportedly carrying black flags with the shahada, the Muslim testament of faith, written it white, commonly used by ISIS.
All three wounded tourists, two Austrians and a Swede, were taken to hospital, where one was treated and discharged, the security statement said.
There was no word on the condition of the other two.
Security officials had initially said the attackers wounded two tourists, a Dane and a German, but such discrepancies are common in the immediate aftermath of terror attacks.
The attack came just hours after the local affiliate of the Islamic State claimed responsibility for an attack a day earlier on a hotel in Cairo near the Giza Pyramids. No one was hurt in the Thursday attack.

Tourism in Egypt
Tourism in Egypt
is going to go bankrupt

Re: Tourism in Egypt
Every time I hear about vacationing westerners (especially those just looking for sunshine and a beach) being targeted in places like Egypt, I wonder why they would ever pick a location where terrorism is not very well-controlled. I guess it is all a matter of degrees, and anyone of us could be walking in a cross walk with a "walk" signal and get runover by someone on their not-so-smart phone posting on their favorite bbs.

I say again, the terrorists win - I will take no vacation and no flight that goes anywhere near the Med.

THESE TOURISTS...
... literally get what they're looking for -- more bang for the bucks. (I'm here all week.)

Exactly. You have to live your life, and can't worry about what might happen. I'm booking my next trip to Paris. Even thinking of staying across the Seine in the 3rd (le Marais) for a change....Long Run wrote:Every time I hear about vacationing westerners (especially those just looking for sunshine and a beach) being targeted in places like Egypt, I wonder why they would ever pick a location where terrorism is not very well-controlled. Re: Tourism in Egypt
Mostly that's bollocks. One may not "worry" about what might happen but one takes steps to obviate problems that are anticipated. Some folks anticipate different problems than other folks do.You have to live your life, and can't worry about what might happen.
Do you have home insurance? Do you lock your doors? Do you avoid walking alone through any particular streets at night? Do you avoid flashing lots of cash in bars? Do you have a burglar alarm? Do you lock your car?
Well done going to Paris (big deal). How about Cairo - planning a trip any time soon? It's not a dare - just an observation that taking a superior attitude about ignoring "what might happen" rather depends upon definitions, doesn't it?
Anyway, superior attitudes belong (justifiably) to the English

Re: Tourism in Egypt
I mean you don't stop doing the things you enjoy doing. Yes, of course I have insurance (homeowners and flood) and lock my house. Usually. Less so my car. I do it because it's prudent. But I don't worth about whether my house is going to be destroyed in the next big storm, and I didn't worry about when I chose to live where I live. I thought about it, evaluated the risks, and bought the house anyway.
Egypt has never been at the top of my list, so no plans. Greece next year to celebrate a significant birthday with one of my BFFs.

Smoking? Alcohol abuse? Stealing women's underclothes from laundry lines? Well, that last one was a bit of a sacrifice but.....Guinevere wrote:I mean you don't stop doing the things you enjoy doing.
Yes, one does stop doing the things one enjoys doing if the risk factor is greater than the possible enjoyment one receives.
What you mean (I dare say) is that the risk factor of travelling to Paris and to Greece (I hope you enjoy both very much and safely too) does not outweigh the pleasure factor for you.
For me, Paris seems OK but Greece might be off the list now. Definitely when I visit SA, I will travel direct from DC or via London and not by way of Dubai. Besides the fact that Emirates are Arsenal sponsors, they are also now too risky (for me).

Re: Tourism in Egypt
I have a trip planned for Prince Edward Island*. Risky I know, but I am nothing if not a thrill seeker.
I have 2 different friends, one in Jerusalem and one in Bergen, Norway who want me to visit soon. Guess which one I am apt to pick.
* Contingent upon husband's hip which currently has a fit of bursitis hanging on.

Yes, but don't you toss yourself over cliffs with babies attached to your back, or some such, just for recreation?Gob wrote:We flew via Dubai to the UK.
