Amy Schumer to Glamour: I'm not plus-size
(CNN)Amy Schumer has absolutely nothing against plus-size women, which is good, as she keeps getting classified as one.
On Tuesday, the "Trainwreck" star posted an Instagram photo that she said was from Glamour magazine, showing her name alongside those of actress Melissa McCarthy, singer Adele and model Ashley Graham.
Want to call Amy Schumer plus size? "There's nothing wrong with being plus size," she says, but at least ask first — right after nailing down the actual definition of plus size.
"Beautiful healthy women," the "Trainwreck" star said Tuesday on Instagram. However, she continued, "Plus size is considered size 16 in America. I go between a size 6 and an 8. @glamourmag put me in their plus size only issue without asking or letting me know and it doesn't feel right to me.
"Young girls seeing my body type thinking that is plus size?"
Glamour’s editor-in-chief, Cindi Leive, took to Twitter to apologize to Schumer, adding that the intention was never to upset the comedian-actress. "We love Amy Schumer, & would never want to offend her. To be clear, @glamourmag special edition never called her plus-size...," Leive tweeted. [No, you just included her in an edition devoted exclusively to women size 12 and up]
Leive added: "But women of all sizes can be inspired by one another’s words. So sorry if implication was otherwise, Amy."
The cover of the "Chic at Any Size" special issue — a steal at $12.99?? — touts "267 Outfits, Ideas & Updates That Flatter Sizes 12 & Up." Fashionista reported that two issues a year are planned in partnership with Lane Bryant, a store where, ironically, sizes start at 14. And it's not exactly Glamour Glamour, Fashionista said, quoting a rep for the magazine who described the effort as "a curated and original editorial product presented by Lane Bryant." Schumer was promoted on the cover as one of the "Women Who Inspire Us."

Re: Plus-size Pissed Off...
She has nothing against plus-size women. She just doesn't want to be associated with them.

I don't particularly care for Amy Schumer's humor, but I know she makes reference to her size in her routines. She's obviously not a size zero, but I certainly wouldn't call her plus size.
If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space.

That was my initial reaction too, Joe...but then I read this quote from her in the article and changed my mind:Joe Guy wrote:She has nothing against plus-size women. She just doesn't want to be associated with them.
She's got a point: if a normal female body is seen by girls as "plus size", that is very very unhealthy."I go between a size 6 and an 8. @glamourmag put me in their plus size only issue without asking or letting me know and it doesn't feel right to me. People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right. The only difference is, they're wrong.

Before I posted above I read that line and paused for a moment. Then I looked at the bigger picture and concluded that her concern for young girls seeing her as a plus-size wasn't as important to her as seeing herself labeled as a plus-size.Econoline wrote: She's got a point: if a normal female body is seen by girls as "plus size", that is very very unhealthy.
So, Amy's voiced concern for young girls doesn't carry enough weight to convince me otherwise....

She only has a point if you accept the idea that being plus-sized is bad or shameful.
Is that what she is teaching?

I don't think it matters what any of us think about "plus size" as being; but she has a point if young girls that that plus size is something to be avoided and/or ashamed of. And from what I've seen many do see it as that.
Re: Plus-size Pissed Off...
If I had to choose, I would say that the obesity and diabetes crisis is more important than the 'body-image crisis' so I would focus on that one first.
But Amy Schumer is being hypocritical.

Re: Plus-size Pissed Off...
They're both a problem, but which one is "more important' probably depends more on what you have personally experienced or seen. Having raised two daughters, I have seen significant and mental problems coming from the obsession with being thinner and, even though my father lost a leg to diabetes in his 70s, I personally think this focus on thinness is a bigger problem.
But, FWIW, I don't see how fat shaming or an obsession with weight helps the diabetics (indeed, it might achieve the opposite effect) while it will definitely have a very adverse effect on potential anorexics/bulimics. and saying a size 10 is too big (or a plus size) is, IMHO, ridiculous (at least for anyone within a standard deviation of normal height).

Someone who is eating appropriately and exercising will have less problem either way. The physical world is the real world.

But those caught in the throes of eating disorders are not perceiving the physical world in a rational way, which is why they have the problems they suffer from. Poor body image can cause a lot of ills, and often ones that aren't easily treated.
Re: Plus-size Pissed Off...
I have to wonder why any of the girls Amy is concerned about would be reading a magazine that is focusing on plus-size women. If the purpose of this addition of the magazine is to attempt to appeal to plus-sized women, then I doubt a lot of minus-size girls are interested and/or reading it.Big RR wrote:I don't think it matters what any of us think about "plus size" as being; but she has a point if young girls that that plus size is something to be avoided and/or ashamed of. I still see it as more as Amy's ego problem than her concern for the health of young girls.
Re: Plus-size Pissed Off...
Well, you just changed subjects from eating, health and body image issues which affect a lot of people to a narrow subset of eating disorders which affect relatively fewer people.Big RR wrote:But those caught in the throes of eating disorders are not perceiving the physical world in a rational way, which is why they have the problems they suffer from. Perhaps you should acknowledge when you do this in the future and not pretend you are responding to the same subject.

Her arms are large. Being plus is looming in her future.
Re: Plus-size Pissed Off...
The comparison of Amy to plus-sized women left her nonplussed.
Re: Plus-size Pissed Off...
She's never been one to say size doesn't matter.
