In early October, the University of Florida posted a timely advisory notice on its Gator Times website.
Although its purpose was mostly to advise young people against dressing in costumes that "reinforce stereotypes of particular races, genders, cultures, or religions," it also served up a curious offer to its students: counseling to anyone offended by a culturally inappropriate getup.
"As a community, we aspire to demonstrate integrity, respect, and compassion that strives to maintain an affirming campus climate for all members of our community," the post reads. "If you are troubled by an incident that does occur, please know that there are many resources available."
Naturally, people on Twitter are thoroughly amused by the highly PC-friendly nature of the post.
"Our country is doomed," wrote one tweeter.
"LOL at #UF for setting up a #Halloween costume hotline to report offensive outfits!" wrote another. "I can finally call about jean shorts!"
The memo also warns students that social media posts regarding such Halloween choices may influence future job prospects, stating that offensive costume choices "can have a long-term impact on your personal and professional reputation."
