Texas man's obit blasts him as possessing 'no redeeming qualities'

The obituary for Leslie Ray "Popeye" Charping isn't your typical viral sendoff. It even includes the line " Leslie's remains will be cremated and kept in the barn until 'Ray,' the family donkey's wood shavings run out."

It seems that viral obituaries are all the rage these days, with writers making sure the deceased are remembered on their way out the door.

There have been obituaries mentioning Hilary Clinton, Donald Trump and even ones that read more like a treatment for the next Matthew McConaughey movie.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, enter the obituary of one Leslie Ray "Popeye" Charping of Galveston, Texas. Charping was a veteran and Naval boxing champion, but that about was the only positive thing said about him.

Charping died on Jan. 30, 2017 after a fight with cancer, aged 74. This was, according to the obit, “29 years longer than expected and much longer than he deserved.”

“He leaves behind 2 relieved children; a son Leslie Roy Charping and daughter, Shiela Smith along with six grandchildren and countless other victims including an ex-wife, relatives, friends, neighbors, doctors, nurses and random strangers,” the obit continues.

And it goes downhill from there:

“At a young age, Leslie quickly became a model example of bad parenting combined with mental illness and a complete commitment to drinking, drugs, womanizing and being generally offensive,” the obit says.

Charping also had a handful of run-ins with the law, according to Harris County court records. His first conviction dates back to 1979, when he pleaded guilty to assault.

He also pleaded guilty in 2008 to assaulting a family member by pouring hot liquid on his then-wife of 40 years. The next year he pleaded guilty to violating the resulting restraining order by calling another family member and threatening to kill her.

According to the obituary, despite being intelligent, Charping lacked ambition, squandered the savings and chased "get rich quick schemes.

“Leslie's hobbies included being abusive to his family, expediting trips to heaven for the beloved family pets and fishing, which he was less skilled with than the previously mentioned," the obituary read. "Leslie's life served no other obvious purpose, he did not contribute to society or serve his community and he possessed no redeeming qualities besides quick whited [sic] sarcasm which was amusing during his sober days.”

The closing line of the obit cuts rather deep:

“With Leslie's passing he will be missed only for what he never did; being a loving husband, father and good friend. No services will be held, there will be no prayers for eternal peace and no apologizes to the family he tortured. Leslie's remains will be cremated and kept in the barn until "Ray", the family donkey's wood shavings run out. Leslie's passing proves that evil does in fact die and hopefully marks a time of healing and safety for all."

A quick Google check finds a lot of references to this, but no actual screen cap or link to the obit itself, not even from the funeral home.  So......

I am having trouble understanding the authorship of the first post here. I think it is part of being much older than the typical expert internet user--when I was nine years old I did not even know what a dial phone was.

Just what part of that post comes from 'Dales' and what part from 'Rubato'?

This is an article from a real writer at the Houston Chronicle, which is the largest paper in Houston. It is good to have a healthy skepticism of posted stories, especially those that seem "too good", but given the authorship of this article, it appears legitimate. (You can go to the HC and the author's page, but unless you are willing to sign up for the HC, you can't see the article yourself). On the other hand . . .

According to another source:

According to the obituary posted on the website of Carnes Funeral Home in Galveston, Leslie Ray “Popeye” Charping died January 30 at the age of 74.

However, the link is no good. And if you go to the funeral home website: http://www.carnesbrothers.com/home/inde ... h_id/15025 there is no obit for Charping. But then, Charping is a real person as are his kids listed in the obit according to the people search sites. And that is the five minutes I want to spend on this.

SG, Dale's sig line (which is frankly my favorite sig line ) comes from one of rube's most bizarre (and telling) indications about his fundamental inability to understand basic human social interaction...

When Bike Bill said what is generally seen as a compliment, (I've always seen it that way; I suspect most normal people do)
