Suffolk (UK) Loves Filth

Post by Sue U »

Is any comment even necessary? I mean other than "Bwahahahahahahah!!!!"
Britons Love Their Gods of Metal
Image
The local tourism board of Britain's Suffolk County, in seeking to attract visitors, asked residents to vote for the county's greatest icon. The plan backfired when the singer of the metal band Cradle of Filth won by a landslide.

The band's frontman, Dani Filth, also crushed "respectable" musician Brian Eno, who also lives in Suffolk. Just how popular is Dani Filth? According to the Telegraph, it wasn't even close:

Records show that Dani Filth, 37, recorded 13,025 votes by having his image clicked on the Suffolk Icons website — more than six times the votes recorded for the next most popular icon.

The poll of members of the public put the Broomhill swimming pool — a near derelict 1930s former lido in Ipswich — in second place with 2,055 votes.

Yes, a swimming pool came in second place. But while these numbers undoubtedly pleased fans of Cradle of Filth, the folks behind Choose Suffolk were not very impressed. They've changed the rules and now have 20 boring images to choose from on the website, and Dani Filth is not among them. Instead, voters must now choose between a wind turbine, a bale of hay, actors in period dress, and other incredibly lame images. A spokesman for Choose Suffolk, Richard Ginger, offered this excuse to the Telegraph about why Dani Filth was removed from the contest: "Effectively the judging panel were looking for icons which had a wider currency outside the borders of Suffolk. I don't want to speak about their decision. Their remit was to look for the icons of Suffolk." Nice work, Choose Suffolk.

Them Brits and their sense of humour..

Here's a similar example from my mate John Otway.
By then, Otway had realised he could use his fanbase, who were in on the joke, to engage in minor publicity stunts. A grassroots campaign saw his "Beware of the Flowers Cause I'm Sure They're Going to Get You Yeah" voted the seventh greatest lyric of all time in a BBC poll.

In 2002, when asked what he wanted for his 50th birthday, he requested "a second hit". A concerted drive, including a poll (scrutinised by the Electoral Reform Society) to select the track, saw "Bunsen Burner" — with music sampled from the Trammps song "Disco Inferno" and lyrics devised to help his daughter with her chemistry homework — reach number nine in the UK Singles Chart on 6 October,[2] and earned Otway an appearance on Top Of The Pops, BBC Television's flagship popular music programme.

To encourage fans to buy more than one copy each of the single, he released three different versions. The flip-side of "Bunsen Burner — The Hit Mix" was a cover of "The House of the Rising Sun" recorded at Abbey Road Studios and featuring 900 of his fans on backing vocals, each of whom was credited by name on the single's sleeve. Thanks to this second hit he has now been able to release his Greatest Hits album. Commenting on the fact that the title of this album is now in the plural, Otway said that he was very proud of it, having "finally got it (the 's') on the right side of Hit".

Look out baby
Look out Pet
Here's the kid
Who's gonna get the Blues
When you go away
I'm on fire
Cause I'm in love
With a girl who's not the girl she was
When I was out with her

I saw you in the garden minute
You looked so debonair
Beware of the flowers
Because I'm sure they're gonna get you
Yeah!

I won't try to say goodbye
Maybe I'll just kick myself inside
I really wanted to go home
You might say that today
Was the very last time you walked this way
You'll tell him on your own

Well I'd tell him where to go to baby
But you know I wouldn't dare
Beware of the flowers
Because I'm sure they're gonna get you
Yeah!

Disagree, Disapprove
Baby they all said that it was me
Who went out in the nude
How can you be so sure
Baby when the love shines its pure

It's a light thine shines on us
Well I know someone who loves you baby
And I know he really cares
Beware of the flowers
Because I'm sure they're gonna get you
Yeah!

Greatest lyrics of all time?

3. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen (Freddie Mercury)
I see a little silhouetto of a man
Scaramouch, Scaramouch, will you do the Fandango
Thunderbolt and lightning, very, very frightening me
(Galileo) Galileo (Galileo) Galileo, Galileo Figaro
Magnifico-o-o-o-o
4. I Am The Walrus - The Beatles (Lennon and McCartney)
Sitting on a cornflake, waiting for the van to come.
Corporation tee-shirt, stupid bloody Tuesday.
Man, you been a naughty boy, you let your face grow long.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, goo goo g'joob.
8. Sit Down - James (Booth/Glennie/Whelan/Gott)
Oh sit down
Oh sit down
Oh sit down
Sit down next to me
Sit down, sit down, sit down, sit down, down
In sympathy
Thought provoking stuff...

Just to pick a bone for the sake of it..

Bohemian Rhapsody was at least inovative in its lyrics and vocally challenging, especially for its day. The whole "story" is a lyrical feast.

The word play and images conjured by "I am the walrus" again, I think are good value, and clever.

James is shit though...

And no one, not even Dylan (both) can match John Otway!

So you couldn't get the same effect by randomly picking words out of a dictionary then? ;)

Okay... here's an example.

What would you make of this in terms of wordplay and imagery?
Grinning jesters teach mankind today's rhetoric rhapsody
Baptising it to music from a kingdom far away
The outcasts tame the wilderness whilst ravens steeped in ebony
Pioneer the roulette wheel to multiply and change
The epitaph to freedom in a kind of martyred pride
Stares as a frozen monument from a drunken combat zone
The master dictates to the millions, "Domination overnight!"
And those left at the finish worship at a empty throne
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?

Geez, those aren't even the best lyrics from I Am The Walrus,. That would be:
Yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dog's eye.
Crabalocker fishwife, pornographic priestess,
Boy, you been a naughty girl you let your knickers down.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, goo goo g'joob.

Suffolk is known the world over as a type of sheep or horse. Some kind of docile animal anyway.
