Stupidity, thy name is "The Centennial School Board"
Re: Stupidity, thy name is "The Centennial School Board"
My Congressman is named Lynch. Perhaps I should stop voting for him and let him know his name is unacceptable.

I'll suspend judgement for now.
For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

There actually are places in this country still called Nigger Hollow and I'm sure there are places in the South that plenty of racists still refer to as Lynch View. If y'all are too obtuse to get that, oh well. It's really ridiculously stupid to compare Lynch as a name of a person to Lynch as a place name, and obviously since this school district and community has maintained the name of the person in context on one of the schools, they get that distinction, too.

I think it would be easy enough to add the first name of Mr. Lynch to the remaining schools, still honoring him and removing the basis for the complaint--why cause offense (or take a chance of causing it if you don't believe anyone has really been offended) when you don't have to?
FWIW, if his last name was Rape, I wouldn't like to see the Rape Elementary Schools either, although I wouldn't have a problem with the James Rape Elementary school.

Without researching beyond the article, my common sense tells me that the reason for not using Mr. Lynch's name on the other two schools is the problem of duplication and confusion of the schools. Perhaps they'll do some historical research and name the other two schools after his family members instead.Big RR wrote:I think it would be easy enough to add the first name of Mr. Lynch to the remaining schools, still honoring him and removing the basis for the complaint--why cause offense (or take a chance of causing it if you don't believe anyone has really been offended) when you don't have to?

Here's an article which casts some light on the stain of lynching that still persists in the African-American psyche - and it's worth reiterating that American lynchings are still well within the oral history tradition of many American families, so sensitivity to the issue is in no way contrived. It takes a whole lot of white privilege to laugh this off.

I would think if Lynch Wood and Lynch Meadows were not confusing, Patrick Lynch Wood and Patrick Lynch Meadows would not be confusing either, but other family members would be fine as well.

Yes, but what if REALLY fucking stupid people saw it, they may think that "Patrick was lynched in that wood," or "Patrick was lynched in that meadow," and be all upset. It should be changed to something less threatening.

Not if the "place name" has that name because of the "name of a person"...It's really ridiculously stupid to compare Lynch as a name of a person to Lynch as a place name
That's not "ridiculously stupid"; it's entirely appropriate...
Let me stand up and agree that any place named "Lynch" that got that name because that is where lynchings took place, should have the name changed forthwith...
That is clearly not the case here...
