San Francisco Giants legend and Hall of Fame first baseman Willie McCovey died on Wednesday.
He was 80.

McCovey died at the Stanford Hospital on Wednesday afternoon after a lengthy “battle with ongoing health issues.” He had been in a wheel chair for several years, and recently developed an infection and was hospitalized last week, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

McCovey played for the Giants from 1959-1973, and then again from 1977-1980 to close out his career. He was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame in 1986.

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

He's the only first baseman I ever saw who could keep one foot on first base and touch second base with his glove.

RIP Willie...

I just read McCovey's Wiki page. All these years and I thought he played a few seasons with the Phillies.

Obviously he didn't. I'm just a font of sports information. Ask me anything.

Was your uncle comfortable using that around children?

That's right, Lon.
“We had a little comedy routine that I didn’t realize. I didn’t talk a whole lot in those days. Lon [Simmons, the long time Giants announcer] would ask me a question and almost had to answer it for me. I always just said, 'That’s right, Lon.’ That line kind of became famous. We got a big kick out of that in later years.”
Giants fans were lucky to have such a great person to root for (doubly so with Mays)
