I wondered why some scores as posted have an asterisk. Maybe someone covered this already, in which case I apologize for missing it.

According to one site:

What does the asterisk in Wordle score mean?
In all our trials the asterisk only showed up in our score if we played the game on Hard mode. Hard mode forces players to use every letter that has been revealed in a previous answer in their next guess.

I didn't know that there was a 'hard mode.' But surely that's the logical way to play, so I play in 'hard mode' all the time (except for once when I was being sloppy). I can see the point: suppose you have CAVES and you find that the AVES is correct but you don't know what the first letter is. So you could have as your next entry WRENS in an attempt to discern the first letter without having to try them all one at a time. (If they all fail obviously it's PAVES.).

I see that while I was writing this TPFKA@W posted with a very similar pattern to mine. There are three words with only a different first letter - it looks as if she, like me, got it only after guessing wrongly twice.

I don’t play in hard mode because sometimes I want to eliminate more letters before I make my first guess. I’m not necessarily trying to solve it in the fewest steps, just trying to solve. Although yes, sometimes I want to get it as quickly as possible. All depends on the day. But not being in hard mode allows me more options. And come on, who doesn’t like to keep their options open
