Huge dope slap! The word today is my every-day starting word! But not today. Today I went with a new one! Could have got this in one - as was bound to happen eventually.

Begging the General's pardon, but it is not a given that if you always use the same word to start you would eventually score a win in one guess.  The reason for this is that

Wordle actually uses two word lists (or properly speaking, lexicons).  There is a list of over 10,000 legal English words that are appropriate for guesses.  And there is a shorter list of 2315 potential solutions to the puzzle.  The short list is carefully and idiosyncratically curated to include only common and familiar words, and it apparently omits plurals like TUCKS.

So as you can see, the go-to word you use as a starter — while it may be a legitimate word and will result in the green and yellow clue boxes for your next choice — may not be on the shorter list of the actual 'target' words, so you would never come up with a correct guess in one.
