I'm planning a trip to NYC in September and I have been to a couple of sites (e.g., Southwest) looking at flights. No choices so far but I have clearly expressed interest and I am not surprised that ads pop up.
So I was reading a NYT piece and up pops an ad from Kayak - Manhattan hotels from $127. I clicked on this and was on the point of booking one at a slightly higher price ($180-ish) when I wondered exactly where in Manhattan this place was. It's Manhattan Kansas when you get down to the small print.
I consider myself a fairly savvy traveller and I nearly bought three nights in Manhattan KS. I'm sure it's lovely at this time of year but it's not what I wanted. And before anyone says the price should have been a giveaway: I checked on line for Manhattan NY and there are rooms at $180 plus taxes and fees close to Times Square.

Well, I learned something new today.
There's a Manhattan in Kansas.
Thank you.
I remember when $127.00 per night would get you a suite....

Manhattan is the home of Kansas State University. I learned that when I read In Cold Blood in high school (because Nancy Clutter was going to attend there had she not been murdered), and it was one of those facts that somehow stuck with me.

Re: Manhattan hotels from $127!
Similar story. I used to travel to Washington DC a lot to talk to the feds and usually I would fly to Baltimore (often much cheaper than Dulles or National), rent a car there and stay the night in Laurel MD which is about 1/2 way. Convenient and usually saved the company travel budget a few hundred. We had an Amex travel agent in our office to handle all the bookings. So I had my itinerary in my hand when I got to the Comfort Inn in Laurel at 11PM.
Except they didn't have a booking for me. They could go on their computer and see that I did have a reservation in Laurel Mississippi at the Comfort Inn there - Betsy's finger must have slipped from MD to MI.
All they had left was the honeymoon suite with a big red heart shaped jacuzzi in the bedroom and a big red heart shaped bed. I slept well but I eschewed the jacuzzi.
