Greenland PM pushes for independence from Denmark after Donald Trump eyes island takeover
Greenland PM Múte Egede calls for independence, citing unequal ties with Denmark days after rejecting Donald Trump’s renewed interest in buying the island.

Greenland's Prime Minister Múte Egede has announced his intention to seek full independence from Denmark. In a recent speech, Egede, a member of the pro-independence Community of the People (IA) party, highlighted that the cooperation between Greenland and Denmark has failed to create true equality.

"The history and current conditions have shown that our cooperation with the Kingdom of Denmark has not succeeded in creating full equality," Egede said. "It is now time for our country to take the next step."

Greenland's PM's remarks come in response to US President-elect Donald Trump’s renewed comments about purchasing the Arctic territory.

Removing the shackles of colonialism
Egede framed the ongoing relationship with Denmark as an obstacle to Greenland’s growth and self-determination. He called for an end to the “shackles of colonialism,” urging Greenland to move forward in its pursuit of sovereignty.

Perhaps they could join with Iceland and create the island nation of Niceland, a compromise nomenclature for the two of them.

Since 2009, Greenland has held the right to declare independence through a referendum.
So much for Danish "imperialism".

If Greenland is still not fully independent of Denmark, it is because that is what Greenland's people have wanted. If they have now changed their minds, then no one is stopping them from becoming independent.

Greenland could always vote for independence, gain their independence, and then join the United States as an unincorporated territory or perhaps they would prefer a path to statehood. At any rate, Denmark would get nothing out of the deal. That would serve them right for having such a rude prime minister the last time. The population is so small that the land settlement, most likely, would make all of them rich at least by Greenland standards. It would not be a good idea for Greenland to be an independent nation; a country with such a small population could be easily overrun by a nation like China or Russia. If Greenland could join the United States as a territory that would be a very valuable acquisition if the land turns out to be as rich in rare earth metals as some claim.

Cute.

My father was stationed in Greenland at Thule for a time when he was with the US Army. Growing up there was a map of Greenland on the wall in our house, some kind of Army issued commemorative thing for people who served there. My father always told us that the names of Iceland and Greenland should have been switched, as Greenland was much, much icier than Iceland - about 80% of Greenland is covered by an ice sheet while less than 15% of Iceland is.
For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.

Greenland, via Denmark, is a member of NATO. If China or Russia attempted to overrun the country, it would trigger Article 5 of the NATO treaty and other members would be forced to intervene.
