Well, why do we make up such a large majority of the combat arms in the United States military?

Something do with lack of jobs, lack of education and general lack, at a guess. And the War of the Rebellion was exactly that - started by traitors and finished by patriots

I also do think there is a tradition among some southerners which includes military service; even among the well educated. If we look at the private military colleges, all except Norwich are in the south, producing many officers (including many lifers) through their programs, which reflects the dedication to the military. Add to that the fact that military service among the enlisted ranks is also respected, and many reserve units are full (I have had a few trials in southern states and the jury consultants always said to try and get a witness' reserve or active military service before the jury as they would be thought better of by most jurors because of that. In the south, the military is viewed as an attractive employer, not an employer of last resort or for "losers" or "suckers" as Trump has suggested.

As for the War of the Rebellion/War of Northern Aggression/War Between the States, I have voiced my opinion on many of these issues and will not clutter this thread about an important current event with a rehash of them.
