Traffic Stop Over Dice Ends In Arrest On 9 Charges

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- A Santa Cruz County man pulled over Thursday for having large dice hanging from his rearview mirror is being held in jail on nine charges, including six felonies.
Sgt. Paul Tashiro tells the Santa Cruz Sentinel that sheriff's deputies pulled over 31-year-old Jose Luis Ortegon of Watsonville because the dice were obstructing his view and he had a faulty parking light.
Tashiro says Ortegon reached for something in the back of the car and refused deputies' orders to get out. He says deputies found an unloaded gun in the vehicle and ammunition in Ortegon's pants pocket.
Tashiro says Ortegon also was under the influence of drugs.
Ortegon reportedly belongs to a local gang and has prior felony convictions that prohibit him from having a weapon.
He was booked on suspicion of six firearm offenses and three other crimes.
