A Canberra man convicted of having the largest collection of child pornography seized in the ACT has been sentenced to a year of weekend jail.


Michael Cooper pleaded guilty of possessing a collection of child pornography amounting to almost 700,000 files, images and videos.

He also pleaded guilty to using the internet to access and publish child pornography.

In January 2010, police searched his Amaroo house acting on a tip-off from the FBI after the 53-year-old posted child porn onto a website.

The police seized eight computers, almost 700 computer disks and a number of hard drives.

In sentencing, Acting Justice John Nield said Cooper had become obsessed with collecting and seemed to regard it as a hobby like stamp collecting.

He described the images as appalling and revolting.

Cooper was sentenced to a year of period detention.

I don't see why that wouldn't work as Child porn has been directly linked to kidnapping and murder of the children involved. The number of children in Asia sold to Westeners as sex slaves is in the thousands, every year. Or the parents that put their children up for prostitusion or as porn subjects for their own plesure or for the money.

So is the killing of an adult worse than the actions of a producer of child porn?
Please concider most of the people I would want to kill probibly deserve it these kids don't. Then the sentencing would make sence

May be if the court decided to have his forhead tattooed with "I colect child porn" and he did his year of weekends but had to live in the real world the rest of the week.

Anyone who says child porn is harmless because a real child isn't involved in any acts; since they're just depicted doing them; hasn't seen this type of pornography.
I had the misfortune of seeing some Japanese heintei, and was greatly disturbed by how violent and depraved it was. I felt like I had just witnessed a horrible accident ...and these were just cartoons! No, anyone finding that entertaining in any way, should be identified and monitored closely.
