We're number three! We're number three!

We're number three! We're number three!

Ok, we're tied for #3 with two other schools.

Over the past 30 years UCSC has often been in the top five as measured by research impact. A metric which was used by ISI Thompson before The Times picked it up.

UCSC ranked third in research influence in world university survey

October 07, 2011

By Tim Stephens

In a recent analysis of the world's top universities, UC Santa Cruz ranked third in research influence as measured by the number of times its published work is cited by academics.

Published as part of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2011-2012, the analysis, conducted by Thompson Reuters, measured overall research influence based on a normalized average number of citations per research paper. The data were aggregated over a six-year period and normalized to reflect variations in citation volume between different subject areas and other factors.

With a citation score of 99.9, UC Santa Cruz ranked behind only Princeton University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (both with top scores of 100). Three other universities--the California Institute of Technology, UC Santa Barbara, and Rice University--also had citation scores of 99.9, followed by Stanford and Harvard at 99.8.

The average number of citations per paper, known as citation impact, is a widely used measure of research performance. When researchers publish an article in a scientific journal, they must cite previous papers by other authors that set the stage for their work. Generally, a paper that describes important findings or ideas and influences the work of other researchers receives more citations than less influential papers.

UCSC has been highly ranked in similar surveys in the past that have focused on particular fields of research. Past rankings for the campus, all based on citation impact data, include first among U.S. universities in astronomy and astrophysics (2008), first among U.S. universities in physics (2007), and second worldwide in physical sciences (2001).

UCSC's overall ranking in the THE World University Rankings for 2011-2012 was 110th. It is one of eight UC campuses among the top 200 universities worldwide.

And one of our more shining alumni continues to impress. A true Santa Cruz undergraduate he gave away microarray technology for screening viruses when he could have sold it for many millions of dollars (a la Jonas Salk). And he is unfailingly generous in giving credit and the spotlight to his collaborators.:

We (Griffith Uni) have broken the top 10 and are now ranked 8th for research universities in Australia.

Not bad for an institution which doesn't celebrate it's 40th anniversary until next year...

Hatch will be starting to think of Uni applications next year, though I'd prefer her to have a gap year.

There is some obvious merit to this method of ranking. But there is at least one obvious flaw: It does not take into account the purpose for which something is cited.

For example, if many papers from, say, Boalt, are cited in sentences such as:
People used to think blah, blah, blah[fn 1], but now we know better.

1. [Citations to billions of Boalt papers]
then maybe being cited many times is not an accurate measure of merit.
Reason is valuable only when it performs against the wordless physical background of the universe.

I started to post that, but didn't want to overstep. Seriously, though - if she takes a year off & wants to see some of the US, I for one would host her a while & show her Montana, at least.

And of course it goes without saying that Hatch would be very welcome here for a quick detox before heading home from Schoolies... ;)

I would be more than delighted to show Hatch my old haunts and dives places of higher learning, that the SF Bay Area is famous for.

I think it's a great idea letting her unwind for a year. :ok
