Old drinking buddy of mine.http://www.sennen-cove.com/n10jun12.htm
It is with great pleasure that we advise that our Second Coxswain Phil Shannon is to be made an MBE in the Queen`s Birthday Honours List announced today.
This is a most apt and fitting recognition of Phil`s long and outstanding service to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution at Sennen Cove.
Joining the lifeboat crew in the late 1960s in the `Susan Ashley`, Philip has taken part in hundreds of services from the Cove in conditions ranging from idyllic to horrendous.
Highlights would probably include the Silver Medal Services to the `Union Crystal` and the `Tungufoss`, with undoubted low point being the loss of friends and colleagues at Penlee.
Phil was in the Crew of the 37ft relief Oakley class lifeboat on that fateful night, trying to get round Land`s End in impossible conditions.
Over 40 years total dedication to the lifeboat service is a rarity indeed, and in today`s world shines out a huge example to our younger generations.
There will be uncontained merriment and leg-pulling in the Cove
`Uncle` Phil we salute you !
Well done Phil Shannon!
Well done Phil Shannon!

Re: Well done Phil Shannon!
Congrats, sounds like a right chap!
(I'm terribly sorry but what's a MBE? Is that like being knighted, or rooked?)

Re: Well done Phil Shannon!
Phil is the second person of my acquaintance to get one, this young lad was guest of honour at me and Hen's wedding.The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is an order of chivalry established on 4 June 1917 by George V of the United Kingdom. The Order comprises five classes in civil and military divisions. In decreasing order of seniority, these are:
* Knight Grand Cross (GBE) or Dame Grand Cross (GBE)
* Knight Commander (KBE) or Dame Commander (DBE)
* Commander (CBE)
* Officer (OBE)
* Member (MBE)
Only the highest two ranks admit an individual into knighthood or damehood automatically, an honour allowing the recipient to use the title "Sir" (male) or "Dame" (female) before his or her first name (though men can be knighted separately from the Orders of Chivalry). Honorary knighthoods, given to individuals who are not nationals of a realm where Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is Head of State, permit usage of the honour as a post-nominal but not as a title before their name. These recipients are classified as honorary members of the Order they receive, and do not contribute to the numbers restricted to that Order as full members do.
There is also a related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are not members of the Order, but who are nonetheless affiliated with the Order. The British Empire Medal has not been used in the United Kingdom or its dependencies since 1993,[1] but is still used by the Cook Islands and by some other Commonwealth nations.
The Order's motto is For God and the Empire. It is the most junior of the British orders of chivalry, and the largest, with over 100,000 living members worldwide

There is an MBE for Cornish Paralympic powerlifter Julian Jeffery, for services to disabled sports.
Jeffery, who suffered brain-damage because of oxygen-starvation at birth, won three powerlifting gold medals in the 100kg class at the world Games in 1999 and holds three world records.
