Run Skippy run!

Post by Gob »

2010 Kangaroo Control Program

Where will the kangaroo cull take place?
A cull of up to 1890 Eastern Grey Kangaroos will take place in grassland and woodland sites within the Canberra Nature Park and nearby unleased land. These sites are Callum Brae Nature Reserve, Crace Nature Reserve, Goorooyarroo Nature Reserve, Jerrabomberra West Nature Reserve, Kama Nature Reserve, Mount Painter Nature Reserve, Mulligan’s Flat Nature Reserve and unleased territory land adjacent to Kama Nature Reserve.

Why is the cull needed?
Culling will occur where ecosystem function is out of balance due to heavy grazing by an over-abundant kangaroo population. In some cases the culling will avert threats to endangered flora and fauna. These threatened species include the Grassland Earless Dragon, Golden Sun Moth, Striped Legless Lizard, Perunga Grasshopper and threatened plants such as the Button Wrinklewort (a perennial herb).

Christ! It looks like the holocaust...

And are there no hungry people in AUS? I just read that people can eat "roo" meat. And sell it by the pound. Why cannot they employ hunters to harvest these animals and give the meat to people in need?

WTF?
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

Seriously?

This will be in part to save a moth and a grasshopper?

We should cull the human herd here in America so we can prevent the extinction of the buffalo, certain fish and various insects. It might even solve our economical problems.

Agreed, we have at least 100 million more people than are needed here in the US and 10 million more than are needed in California.

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

I agree with Tim and Rube............Roo meat is easy to prepare and quite tasty. :)
I expect to go straight to hell...........at least I won't have to spend time making new friends.

I agree with Tim, Miles and rubato, the sheer waste of this resource is a source of shame. They say;
Given the relatively low number of kangaroos being culled, and the high costs of establishing, administering and monitoring a commercial operation, it would not be cost-effective for the ACT Government to enter the commercial industry.
Then bring in a commercial operation from one of the bigger states!

That’s because it is a government that is doing this, they just don’t understand profit. They wouldn’t recognize a business plan if you smacked them between the eyes with one.

Come on guys, it’s a cull! We cant take free stuff and sell it for a profit! We would lose money!

Sadly, of course they would.

I guess it never occured to them that they could have contracted with a private organization to do this, (in exchange for a fee and a percentage of the profits) and not only would they have made a profit, they wouldn't even have had the expense of conducting the operation.

Yeah, but this is a government. It wouldn’t take long before they saw it as a source of revenue and before you could say fair dink’um, the kangaroo would be extinct.
