She needs treatment alright..

Woman wanting medical help shoots self

By Ken Kolker
NILES, Mich. (WOOD) - The pain in her right shoulder was unbearable and, without health insurance, Kathy Myers was desperate.

So, she sought .25-caliber relief.

In her basement bedroom on Thursday, the 41-year-old woman shot herself in the same shoulder with a .25-caliber handgun, hoping it could get her the medical help she said she needs.

Instead, she's back home, still in pain, and could face criminal charges.

Myers showed 24 Hour News 8 how she did it. She was lying in her bed in the basement, put pillows in front of and behind her right shoulder, along with an ice pack. Then, she fired a single shot through the front pillow.

The bullet pierced the front of her shoulder and exited the rear, lodging in the ice pack. She said she didn't feel any pain, just burning.

"It just felt warm. That's all," she said.

Myers, 41, said she told her girlfriend's mother to call 911.

Myers said she hurt her shoulder about a month ago when her 80-pound golden Labrador went after one of her little dogs. She tried to stop the dog, which jerked her right shoulder.

"I felt it pop in three places in my collar bone," she said.

Doctors gave her some anti-inflammatories, but couldn't do much more than that, she said. "I didn't have insurance, so I couldn't get a CT-scan or MRI."

Myers is among the 1.2 million uninsured people living in Michigan -- a number that has remained steady for about three years, state health officials said.

The pain, she says, is so excruciating that she can't sleep. She said she couldn't afford to see a neurologist. Myers says she lost her job with a hazardous-waste removal company in southern Indiana months ago.

She said she hasn't qualified for disability or Medicaid.

It was Thursday, she said, when she came up with the idea of shooting herself. "I figured if I did something that would not necessarily make it life-threatening but make it imminent danger that something would be done," she said. "I wanted them to fix me. I just wanted to be fixed."

She hoped the bullet would force doctors to treat what she believes is a rotator cuff injury. Instead, emergency room doctors at Lakeland Hospital treated only the bullet wound and sent her home.

On Friday, Niles Police said they would talk to prosecutors to determine what, if any, charges to file against Myers.

Now, she's having second thoughts.

"It didn't take the pain away," she said. "I figured it would take the pain away from the rotator cuff, where at least I could focus on something else, and maybe they would fix me, you know. I guess I should have shot a little lower and got the bone and the artery."

My god some people are desperate.

Here is an equally depressing story to start a Monday on ...
Bullied to suicide bid

EXTREME bullying has left a teenage boy in a wheelchair unable to speak or walk and taking food and liquids through a tube to his stomach.

Dakoda-Lee Stainer, 14, suffered brain damage when deprived of oxygen for more than 20 minutes after attempting to take his own life.

The teen, now under around-the-clock care in priority disability housing, endured months of relentless attacks by bullies before reaching the point of despair. Friends said Dakoda had rocks thrown at him and was admitted to hospital for a head injury as the cruel bullying turned physical.

On the day he tried to end it all he had been accosted by the same gang of youths on the school bus.

The teen, who attended Melville High School at Kempsey, on the North Coast, was found in a bedroom at home on September 4 last year - about 13 months after another 14-year-old, Alex Wildman, killed himself at Lismore because of violent run-ins with schoolmates.

Dakoda's family and friends agreed to speak about his plight in a bid to get authorities to take bullying more seriously and prevent further tragedies.

In the wake of the Wildman case, the Department of Education and Training said it would review the way in which counsellors were allocated to schools and trial a new email address in selected schools inviting people to report bullying.

Dakoda's mum Theresa said yesterday: "I can't imagine what those kids (bullies) would have put him through to get him to that state.

"I don't know how these mongrels ate away at my boy's strength ... "

Theresa, now living on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, said her son was making progress, communicating with his eyes and by shaking. He was attempting to move his arms and legs.

"He lost oxygen to the brain for at least 22 or 23 minutes," she said.

"When we got to hospital it took them 12 minutes to restart his heart."

Probably would have been better to just let him die.

What makes me sick is if these kids fathers or adult friend got involved and gave one of the bullies a smack they would go to prison.
Back in the good old days (Before anyone complanes, they weren't always the best days) Bullies could expect to be touched up by big brothers, dads, mates and I know of at least four times the police getting called and a well placed kick being used.
Today most bullies have the protection of the PC world we have created. Without the threat of getting back what you give out bullies don't fear the reporcusions of their actions.
Not to mention the what the bullies parents would do if thier little darling got a slapping. Wouldn't that be a awlful thing to see Little Bully coming home with a black eye, mumy and dady would be beside themselves with horrer and without dought want to see Thier bully's attacker charged.

Come on just let kids fight back if they have to, even if it means getting big brother to do the hitting.

I saw someone who stood up to a bully have the bully's father show up at his house. The bully's father was a cop.

They moved to another state within a month.

I believe I posted something about the US Bill of Rights Second Amendment in another thread someplace.

Which leads me to ask.....

These sons of bitches will grow up to be bigger and bigger bullies and if society is unable or unwilling to correct their behaviour.

Then.....

A .45 acp rnd to the cranium is the only alternative.

Everyone has the right to defend themselves and if it takes lethal force, so be it!

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

I will, to the day I die, never forget an incident that happened when I was about 6-7 years old. A friend of my father came round, and said to my old man; "John B's done it again, she's in hospital." My father , sent me out of the room, and I heard through the door, a brief conflab. He came into me and my mother, "I'm going out with Will Bach and a few friends, if anyone asks we were here all evening, right boy?"

He came back within the half hour, I was ever so puzzled. The police came knocking on the door later that evening, they didn't stay long, they seemed to be having a laugh and a joke with the old man. One of them came over to me, ruffled my hair and said; "He's a good soccer player your dad isn't he, I bet you really admire him?" Of course I said yes.

John B, a guy who lived down the road, whose wife always seemed to have a black eye , left the town when he got out of hospital a few months later.

Gob He sounds like a man you should be proud of. Not many would be brave enough to even think of standing up for themselves little only anyone else.
I would love to see the day when knowing you neighbours would be there for you.

Dales You are so very right. I wish there were more people willing to see what is going on and how the world will be in the near future.
