My Little Girl

Post by Lord Jim »

So I picked Tati up at school yesterday...and as is my usual habit, I remind her to bring home her spelling book (she's got straight As across the board except on her spelling tests...and I know the reason for that is it's not tied to an assignment....(But I digress...)

Normally she says "yes I've got it" or "I'll go get it"....

But yesterday she said to me: "I've got the book! Will you stop bugging me!"

She's always had a temper, (she got that from her mommy) but she hasn't been short with me like that since she was two....

So we get back to the house, she runs into her room and slams the door...

And I turn to Kelly, completely bewildered, and ask, "do you know what that's about?"

And she smiles and says to me, "our little girl has become a little woman"...

And I respond :

"Is that your cutsie way of telling me that she's had her first period?"

And then I decided to make a joke out of it, so it wouldn't seem like a big deal, (and to get Tati to come out of her room) and said:

"Oh that's just great. I guess now I get to live with two women with PMS every month...

I think Jimmy and I will just move into a hotel for the next five years..."

I suggested that it would be really nice if they could co-ordinate their schedules so that they could have PMS at the same time, so that I wouldn't have to deal with two different doses of PMS every month...

My girl has the weirdest periods ever.

She becomes kind, considerate and thoughtful.

I know. Weird, right!

We eventually synchronized. It took about three years. it probably would have been quicker, but she spends every second week with her Dad.

When we finally did synchronize, I had my hysterectomy.

Don't take Tati's temper with you to heart. She is probably also mourning that she is know longer your little girl and she is wondering how you will take that. (Particularly seeing it isn't her fault.)

Jim, you can check out 3:17 to 6:20 for an "enlightened" father's approach to the situation:

I remember Hatch's first so well. It was a privilege to be there to support her.

But by buggery am I happy that she responds to them in the way Hen describes above.

I ALWAYS knew when my sister's periods were coming around, and just learned to avoid her a few days a month. Now that she's menopausal, and it's all become completely erratic, I try to limit my contact to major holidays.

My family stood at the door and threw chocolates to protect themselves.

(Ha. I just realized that when I used to tell them that my immense chocolate intake was a medical NEED, I was actually correct as my Iron levels were so drastically low I did require the chocolate to function. :D. )

My sister was a terror she started pretty unceremoniously however as she grew older that changed.

But I didn't have to endure it long, I left home shortly after I turned 17 ( I may have mentioned I was 16 on another board, that was a miscalculation).

We haven't spoken to each other much sense, not at all after 93.

You can have her Scoot she's now a Canuck...

I reckon you should give her a big cuddle. She is potentially embarrassed as well as confused as to how this will change her relationship with you once you know.

It's interesting you say that...

We had a chat along those lines a couple of hours ago....

I started to think last night, that she wanted me to know this was going on...but she didn't want to talk to me about it ...she preferred, understandably, to talk to her mother about it...

And that's why I felt that the best thing to do was to make light of it ; to provide reassurance that it didn't change anything...

From the time she was an infant, she has always been "daddy's little girl"...she and I have always been very close; she has always shared everything about her life with me, (even more so than with her mother) and I think the fact that she didn't feel that she could talk to me about this was creating some anxiety for her.

And I think what was stressing her out about this, (she's only 12 fer crissake) wasn't that she was mourning the idea of no longer being daddy's little girl, but that she was afraid that I would no longer see her that way...

I made very clear to her in the conversation we had, that no matter how old she gets, when she has boyfriends, when she gets married, even when she's 60 years old...(a wide-eyed concept for her)

She will still, always be my little girl...

And of course I was a bit sarcastic...

"Sweetheart, nothing has changed between yesterday and today....You're the same person you were yesterday, and so am I...

Unless of course you've become a werewolf or a zombie...".

And then we kicked back and watched The Wizard Of Oz.

My sister was always nuts, every day of every month. Our relationship has improved markedly since she moved 3000 miles away!
