Assuming this kid lives long enough, what happens seventy some odd years from now when he's still in prison? What possible lesson could that teach people? Especially since this lesson appears to be aimed at those too young to even understand it.

If they're going to lock him up and throw away the key, they might as well just kill him. Same end result, just save a few decades of a miserable existence behind bars.

There may be times when lifetime incarceration is necessary to protect society, but in most cases I don't think so. Yes, some people cannot be rehabilitated, but that doesn't mean we should give up on trying to do so, especially in the case of juveniles--extended imprisonment should be a last resort. However, while existence is prison is undoubtedly miserable, I do not think society should have the right to execute anyone.

Luckily, the life without parole doesn't appear to be an option. Earlier this year, the Supreme Court ruled that it is unconstitutional to mandate a sentence of life without possibility of parole for juveniles convicted of manslaughter.

The kid needs help first and foremost. A review of the services that have failed him would be the next step. Maybe each jurisdiction did everything right, who knows as moving around could keep past reports/problems from becoming red lights to new examiners.

The Supreme Court did not remove either the death penalty or LWOP from juvenile cases. It only said that they cannot be mandatory, i.e., allowing no discretion for consderations of a child's individual capacities and circumstances.

Yeah, you're right. At least now he has a chance of not getting it though. Too bad there's already several thousand juveniles that have already been sentenced that way.
