Batten down the hatches
Re: Batten down the hatches
Does anyone else see that as potentially missing Florida entirely and heading right for Houston again?

Truth is out.... rubato's a Republican!!!!
rubato wrote:MajGenl.Meade wrote:That's a possibility. But condemning people's property in that fashion would require rehousing them. Who is to pay for that? In the end, it might be more economically sound but what about all the other people located in areas that a big hurricane can easily make homeless? The Carolina coast for example.
In a way, it's a bit like Lincoln considering purchasing all the slaves in the south in order to free them rather than have the expense of the war. Practical but not politically feasible.
Not My. Problem
The people of Texas and Houston can decide to reimburse them or not. If they were really such rugged individualists they would refuse reimbursement. The federal flood ins program should condemn areas where flooding is highly probable, refuse to insure them, and require that purchasers, residents, and mortgage holders be notified. I would be content for a market who was so informed to set the value on such properties. The people who I've there should be informed at least annually so they can make better decisions about fleeing.

Yup. A Gulf Coast landfall is within the realm of possibilities. I hate shitting on Florida or the Carolinas, but I can't imagine Texas and Louisiana taking another hit right now.Scooter wrote:Does anyone else see that as potentially missing Florida entirely and heading right for Houston again?

Batten down the hatches
If Irma did hit Houston, can you imagine the scenario of where the mountains of trash and debris that has piled up would go? No one would be safe and rescue efforts would be deadly.
This is going to be scary good to watch.

I will not complain about the cold and snow this winter - I'm happy to live in a place where really bad hurricanes are very rare.

Mayor of Miami-Dade was just on TV telling people to begin evacuating by Wednesday morning. That's 2.7 million people.

They're calling her the strongest Atlantic hurricane in over a decade.
Another interesting fact: we have never before had 2 category 4 or stronger hurricanes make landfall in the US in the same year - perhaps this is God's wrath for Trump?
It does look like the models are no longer showing a possible turn across the Gulf toward Texas, so that's a relief. But if she isn't weakened by time spent over the islands, she's gonna bring hell with it to Florida - very worried for my family and friends who live there or currently visiting.
I also read that statistics show female-named hurricanes tend to be more destructive than male ones - interesting factoid.

I was just speaking to a friend of mine from Ft. Lauderdale, he was asking me what the weather was like up here, as he is planning on decamping in the next day or two and is looking for somewhere to land until the worst is over.

I'm Republican because I suggested doing the opposite of what Texas, a deeply RED state has actually done. Do you always have this kind of problem with simple logic problems?MajGenl.Meade wrote:Truth is out.... rubato's a Republican!!!!

Or do you have some kind of fantasy Republican who is wise and thoughtful, like I am? Unlike the real ones who elected Trump by 90%?

Could that be because there have been more hurricanes with female's names, since they weren't giving male names to hurricanes for the first thirty years?BoSoxGal wrote:I also read that statistics show female-named hurricanes tend to be more destructive than male ones - interesting factoid.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

I gather the study was debunked: Girl hurricanes not more deadly than boy hurricanes

Insane cost of living is a daily thing, whilst hurricanes are very occasional. Also, wildfires, mudslides, earthquakes - California, a lovely place to visit!

Speaking of places better to visit than live: Montana's been on fire since late June/early July, over 600,000 acres burned in the worst fire season in almost 2 decades, and no rain in sight for weeks. The air quality there right now is worse than Beijing - I do NOT miss that!

Come visit us sometime.
As far as New England.....
I would hate to put up with the freakish cold winters.
