You can start at that and move the target out. There's a number of urban scenarios where the threat will be further out ...and don't wait for imminent. The police don't. Rack, draw and sight, as soon as you think there is a threat. Like Lib says, that should be all the warning you need to give. If the assailant sees that and still advances; then you know the threat is imminent and use force. Don't reduce your chances of saving yourself, by giving him the upperhand.

Prolly wouldn't fit in her purse as well as the .380 but I can see how getting past it would be an issue...

You have one big advantage BSG, at least no one can accuse you of buying a gun in order to compensate for having a tiny penis.

I'm sure she gets a big penis whenever she wants one!

Scooter, I am still interested in a nice Canadian lesbian - more interested depending on the status of things November 9, 2012. ;)

The practice ammo for my .380 is $20/box - I'm planning to go through a box each month, or thereabouts. I do want to practice, practice until I feel very comfortable with it at various distances. It would be foolish to carry it otherwise.

First, who's gonna carry a .357, or a 40 S&W, a polymer small frame 380 is perfect. When I go hunting I don't carry my .357 because of weight, I use my wifes snub nose S&W J-frame 38. I figure if I cant scare a bear or a cat with the noise, it's still not an immenent threat until it's within range.

Like I said on the first page of this, if you are worried about the effectiveness of the 380, use mag-safe ammo.

A .380 is a mouse gun, a pipsqueak caliber that DOES NOT have enough stopping power. My uncle used to carry one (a Walther PPK) when he worked as a courier...then he was attacked by a guy that turned out to be on PCP. The guy took an entire magazine, including shots through both lungs and one dead-center in the chest (the low-power round did not penetrate the sternum), and didn't go down until the last shot hit him in the neck & severed his carotid artery. Every round hit, all but the last one in the chest.

The next day, he bought a .44 Magnum. He now carries a Ruger in .454 Casull. MINIMUM, I would want a .38 Special. Liz's friend carries a Chiefs Special (I think a J-frame) with a 3" barrel...tiny as she is (4'5", ~80lbs), while she can SHOOT a large-caliber handgun (up to and including my uncle's S&W .500), she really can't carry anything larger.

Why don't you offer yourself up to test the stopping power of six shots from my .380, then?

Let it be, BSG.

He doesn't have to go down. All you have to do is get away.

If your uncle is in a wheel chair, then he really doesn't have to "carry" it then does he.

I was told to load hollow point ammo when actually carrying for protection, to increase the stopping power.

Thoughts?

Thoughts?

It will increase the stopping power; in a sense it increases the caliber of your round. After your bullet is fired and leaves the chamber, the metal expands, or 'mushrooms'. This is why the 'bullet' (not the casing) is made of lead. Lead is a soft metal that mushrooms easily.

Image

Hollowing the round point will greatly increase the bullet's expansion. The mushroom will open out to the depth of the hollow.

Big Scientific diagram

Before this invention some shooters would notch groves in x's or star patterns, on the tips of their bullets to achieve a similar effect.

Just a note, this may not apply in Montana: there have been cases in California of folks who used these in self-defense, being sued. I can't recall the terms but something about these being excessively damaging [duh] and show the shooter used undue force ...or some crap.

There may be slightly more recoil, such as if you were firing a larger caliber.
You might want to practice with a few rounds, but don't do all your training with these as that could get pricey
