Trump bans travel from Europe, but not the UK and Ireland....
Donald Trump has announced that the US would temporarily suspend most travel from the European Union, as the country reckons with the spread of coronavirus and the White House grapples with the severity of the situation.

The restrictions, which would begin on Friday and last for 30 days, would not apply to US citizens or to travelers from the UK. The restrictions apply to most foreign nationals who have been in the 26 countries of the Schengen area during the 14 days before their planned arrival in the US.

Trump made the announcement in an Oval Office speech on Wednesday evening on the federal response to what the World Health Organization has declared a global pandemic.

During the rare address to the nation, Trump defended his administration’s response while laying blame on the European Union for not acting quickly enough to address the “foreign virus”, saying US clusters had been “seeded” by European travelers.

“We made a lifesaving move with early action on China,” he said. “Now we must take the same action with Europe.”

Trump also downplayed warnings of a potential recession: “This is not a financial crisis, this is just a temporary moment of time that we will overcome as a nation and as a world,” he said.

“The vast majority of Americans, the risk is very, very low,” he added, but he said that older Americans should avoid travel and endorsed social distancing and avoiding large gatherings. “Every community faces different risks,” he noted and encouraged Americans to listen to local officials.

Because he has golf courses in the UK and Ireland. Never forget, its always about the grift.

Much as I'd hate to think that was the reason behind the decision, it wouldn't surprise me.

Also, it's to punish the EU for laughing at him. Petty grudges are a significant motivating factor for many of his actions.

The markets reacted to his "decisiveness" and "reassurance" by tanking enough to trigger another stop in trading.

I had heard he tested positive, but why is he hospitalized? Most people are quarantined at home absent serious complications requiring hospitalization; was there any reporting on this?

He has diabetes, she’s a recent cancer survivor, they’re both in their 60s - I suppose it is out of an abundance of caution. Reports from the treating physicians on the front lines of this illness have been consistent that many patients with comorbidities and elder patients have gone from exhibiting no symptoms to death within hours. Seriously. They don’t know how this virus works entirely but clearly is it insidious and deadly in some people. If I was Hanks and had his money, I’d opt for letting the hospital do absolutely everything to give me the best shot to recover fully without complication.

This piece has more info - sounds like Oz is on top of the coronavirus response.

That makes sense; especially for her. Personally, I would also factor in the possibility of getting a hospital infection while there (and in a weakened state) as a balancing factor when deciding what to do--with his money he could get round the clock healthcare at home. I imagine he considered this in making his decision.

From the way I read the NYT piece and others about Hanks/Wilson, they’re currently on mandated isolation - though I’m not sure what measures if any the Australian government has in place for anybody who attempts to sign out AMA before being cleared for release with a covid-19 infection.

I share your concern about hospitals, but I suspect the isolation unit is a couple of steps above the usual Petri dish of potential infection that a hospital room offers.

Oh well, on the bright side at least we're going to be spared those horrible saccharine movies he makes for a while.

Next up in the crazy world of Republican “leadership” the Senate and #MoscowMitch go on Spring Break until 3/23 and refuse to take up any Covid-19 related legislation until they get back.

Assholes. Truly. What a bunch of entitled, nasty, self-centered non-humans.

I’m very relieved to have just heard that my very elderly diabetic pulmonary compromised client has just agreed to self isolate for the time being as coronavirus cases keep rising here in Massachusetts; instead of going out for dinners, I’ll be cooking for him at home and bringing the meals to him, then taking him for after dinner meanders (in the car) as he still wants to get out of the house at least once a day.

I’ll be staying home myself except for walks in the park with my dog Riley - staying a healthy distance from other humans. My cousin’s going to pick up my groceries every week for me, or if I shop it will be late at night when the grocery store is nearly empty. I’m obviously worried some for myself with a compromised immune system, but even more for the geezers I care for and very much care about - it would be devastating to be the one who carries death to their doorstep.

Now I just need to find a good shrimp Mozambique recipe!

The county where I live was just ordered to close all schools, gyms and social/event facilities for 14 days by the governor.

One wonders if one will see martial law at some point because the school kids, the teenagers in particular, are having very public parties which defeats the purpose of closing the schools. I never thought I would live to even entertain the thought of it.

Just read this on my friendly book of faces (credit Adam-Troy Castro):
On the one hand we have this deadly infestation destroying our economy and threatening the lives of millions, with the elderly especially vulnerable to contamination. And he isn't handling the Coronavirus well either.

If you watched Trump speak last night, didn't you think he looked kinda disoriented? He's always bad at reading a script but last night he seemed like he was about ready to poop his presidential pants.
