Bill Cosby Found Guilty In Sexual Assault Trial

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) — Bill Cosby was convicted Thursday of drugging and molesting a woman in the first big celebrity trial of the #MeToo era, completing the spectacular late-life downfall of a comedian who broke racial barriers in Hollywood on his way to TV superstardom as America’s Dad.

Cosby, 80, could end up spending his final years in prison after a jury concluded he sexually violated Temple University employee Andrea Constand at his suburban Philadelphia home in 2004. He claimed the encounter was consensual.

The verdict came after a two-week retrial in which prosecutors put five other women on the stand who testified that Cosby, married for 54 years, drugged and violated them, too. [This was a key difference from the first trial, where the judge only permitted one other woman to testify.] One of those women asked him through her tears, “You remember, don’t you, Mr. Cosby?”

The panel of seven men and five women reached a verdict after deliberating 14 hours over two days, vindicating prosecutors’ decision to retry Cosby after his first trial ended with a hung jury less than a year ago.

Cosby could get up to 10 years in prison on each of the three counts of aggravated indecent assault. He is likely to get less than that under state sentencing guidelines, but given his age, even a modest term could mean he will die behind bars. [Which is exactly what one of the most prolific serial sexual assaulters in US history deserves. I would love to see him get 20 years and live to serve every single one of them.]

60+ have come forward publicly, who knows how many lurk in the shadows. That’s a pretty prolific rapist - but you’re right, many sexual predators are prolific and active throughout their lifetimes, as Cosby was.

I suspect some horrible illness will soon befall the Cos and/or his enabling wife, Camille.

Local tv covered the verdict ad nauseam all afternoon yesterday. My wife was pissed that it pre-empted "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" In one of the many press conferences somebody on the prosecutors team said they would be going after Dr. Cosby (Temple University announced they are considering revoking his honorary degree, but he has an earned doctorate from UMass) for cost of the trials. That could be a very big sack of cash. He said they would be going after total costs including costs of sequestering the juries in both trials. Hard for Cosby to plead hardship when part of the defense this time was that his multi-millions pay-offs to victims was just chump change to make them go away, not an admission of guilt.
