Lighter/matches is another "always carry" (i am a smoker) and for some reason TSA has not confiscated those things even when I have them in my carry-on.
The TSA snagged my nice Zippo lighter when I was flying out of Oakland in 2007 for my daughter's wedding in Hawaii.

Bastords! :arg

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

I found if you put everything in the carry on, lighters,matches, cigarettes, wallet,money, change,basically empty your pockets, all of it makes it through. If you put the lighter/matches/etc in one of those trays, it gets taken.

They took my little swiss army pocket knife one time.

Now, right before I go through security, I empty my pockets 100% into the carry on bag (a knapsack). This way no tray thingy and I can get going much quicker.

This past time to/from vegas we ended up with the TSA pre-screen thingy so we just cruised right through. No taking belts and shoes off.
Didn't pay extra either.
And no questionaire.
