A postmaster has been forced to take over an empty school as more than 40,000 cards pour in to mark the 100th birthday of Captain Tom Moore as a team of aircraft restorers prepare a Spitfire for flypast on his big day.

The 99-year-old, who crowdfunded £28million for the NHS by walking lengths of his garden in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire, was flooded with letters ahead of his centenary on April 30, which were sorted by the South Midlands Mail Centre in Northampton.

Bedford School, attended by Captain Tom's grandson, Benjie, accepted the delivery after providing their Great Hall for socially-distancing staff to open each card.

Bill Chandi, who is in charge of the local post office, told the Bedford Independent: 'In all my years as a Post Master, I’ve never seen anything like this.

Now you know why the people who grew up in the 1930s and 1940s were given EARNED the title of "The Greatest Generation".

Those old-timers didn't actually earn that title "The Greatest Generation." It was bestowed (were given) upon them by Tom Brokow, after authoring a book by the same name in 2001.
The Greatest Generation is a term used to describe those Americans who grew up during the Great Depression and fought in World War II, or whose labor helped win it. The term "the Greatest Generation" is thought to have been coined by former NBC Nightly News anchor and author Tom Brokaw in his book by the same name.

But of all the other generations out there, including the ones that fought in the Revolution, the War of the Rebellion, or The (First) War to End All Wars, they were the only ones that were given the appellation.  Tom Brokaw, Tom Sawyer, or Tom and Jerry — it really doesn't matter who was the first one to coin the title.

And you'd better come up with some pretty convincing arguments if you're going to make me change my belief that they EARNED it.

BB, believe what you want -- you always do, regardless.

By the end of WWII our armed forces did, if fact, earn the respect and gratitude of an entire nation, and most of the free world.

However, those who survived the war had to wait until 2001 to become part of, and to be known as, the greatest generation, when the phrase was coined and made famous by Brokow.

Every man and woman, from whatever country, who took arms against the Nazi threat earned and deserved that accolade.

RIP brave old bloke...
A great-great-grandfather who became world's oldest person to ride a rollercoaster and get a first tattoo has died at the age of 108.

Jack Reynolds, of Derbyshire, was known for his age-defying stunts to raise money for charity.

He held four Guinness World Records which he all achieved over the age of 100.

Mr Reynolds, who was dubbed the Centenarian Daredevil by Guinness World Records and was known as 'Jack the Lad', wanted to achieve a world record every year to raise money.

He last year appeared in the Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks in a cameo role.

Presenter Susanna Reid paid tribute to Mr Reynolds in a tweet and called him 'an inspiration'.

She wrote: 'Jack was an inspiration. He remains a legend. Thank you Jack for being such a good friend of [Good Morning Britain] and [Katy Rickitt] for sharing his story. RIP Jack Reynolds and huge love to your family'.

Kate Hemingway, who works for ITV's Good Morning Britain, wrote in a tweet: 'Thinking of the very lovely and incredibly funny Jack Reynolds who has sadly passed away at the age of 108. Jack was a great friend of [Good Morning Britain] and I'll never forget meeting him when he appeared in Hollyoaks.

'Sending love and best wishes to Jayne and all of Jack's family x'.

Mr Reynolds is survived by his children, 20 great-grandchildren, and eight grandchildren. He was also a great-great grandfather of three.

This lovely man is now hospitalized with covid19. He couldn’t get vaccinated because he was already battling pneumonia.

Prayers for Captain Tom.

Captain Sir Tom Moore has died with coronavirus.

Image

The 100-year-old, who raised almost £33m for NHS charities, was taken to Bedford Hospital after requiring help with his breathing on Sunday.

The Queen led tributes to Capt Sir Tom, "recognising the inspiration he provided for the whole nation and others across the world".

His daughters said they "shared laughter and tears" with their father in their final few hours together.

Capt Sir Tom tested positive for Covid-19 last week. His family said due to other medication he was receiving for pneumonia, he was unable to be vaccinated.

The Army veteran won the nation's hearts by walking 100 laps of his garden in Marston Moretaine last year during the first lockdown, raising money for NHS Charities Together.

He was knighted by the Queen in July in a special ceremony at Windsor Castle.

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said: "Her Majesty very much enjoyed meeting Capt Sir Tom and his family at Windsor last year. Her thoughts, and those of the royal family, are with them, recognising the inspiration he provided for the whole nation and others across the world."

In a statement, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: "Captain Sir Tom Moore was a hero in the truest sense of the word. In the dark days of the Second World War he fought for freedom and in the face of this country's deepest post-war crisis he united us all, he cheered us all up, and he embodied the triumph of the human spirit.

"He became not just a national inspiration but a beacon of hope for the world. Our thoughts are with his daughter Hannah and all his family."

The flag above 10 Downing Street has been flying at half-mast following the news.

Boris Johnson has spoken to Capt Sir Tom's daughter Mrs Ingram-Moore to offer his condolences.
“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.”

Very sad. :( Still, it's good news about the virus. :?

A clergyman from a prominent Church of England parish yesterday condemned the commemoration of Captain Sir Tom Moore as a ‘cult of white British nationalism’.

Image

The Reverend Jarel Robinson-Brown appeared to dismiss the work of the Covid fund-raiser, whose efforts were praised by all political leaders and the Archbishop of Canterbury.

The cleric, newly appointed to a prestigious post by the Bishop of London, the Right Reverend Sarah Mullally, added that he would not join Wednesday night's national clap to mark the passing of Captain Tom.

He responded to the veteran’s death by tweeting: ‘The cult of Captain Tom is a cult of White British Nationalism. I will offer prayers for the repose of his kind and generous soul, but I will not be joining the “National Clap”.’

Hundreds of thousands of Britons across the nation took to their doorsteps yesterday evening to pay tribute to Sir Captain Moore after he died of coronavirus yesterday.

The intervention by the 29-year-old black and gay activist appeared to undermine the Church of England and its handling of the Covid crisis at a time when its leaders, including the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby, have been facing criticism for their willingness to close churches.

The Archbishop marked Captain Tom’s death by saying he was ‘an inspiration to millions’.

Mr Robinson-Brown deleted the tweet after a fierce backlash and posted an apology, saying: ‘I offer an unreserved apology for the insensitive timing and content of my tweet regarding the clap for Captain Tom.’
Idiot. Does he not know that Sir Tom and his ilk were battling the sort of people who would have marched him to the gas chamber?

I suppose he'll be told to go and pray...

I can't figure out what was going through his mind but at least his apology appears to be genuine and he did not blame the media for misquoting him or even for twisting his words.
