I knew a young woman in college whose name was Isis (not sure if it was her real name or she just wnated to pretend she was the Egyptian goddess); personally, I liked the name.

Maybe s/he had been watching Downton Abbey, in which Lord Granthams's dog is Isis.
A Public Lashing is Appropriate
I knew a stripper at Lou Turk's near PHL who went by the name Isis.
She had a nice bod at the time, but hardly a goddess.
Over forty years have passed, she may have renamed herself Crisis at this point.

That may be so, but it was Howard Schultz who was the face of the company all over TV back in May 2018 when the racial bias incident occurred in Philadelphia that made big news and prompted the closure of all stores nationwide for a racial bias training.
Here’s a story about the ongoing efforts the company has engaged in to educate its employees. https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2 ... hats-next/

For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts
Re: A Public Lashing is Appropriate
Many moons ago, in my yoot, I was working a summer as a waitress in a middle tier restaurant in Bloomington, Indiana. The restaurant was a popular spot for Bob Knight and his very winning and popular basketball team. Bob, his brat Pat and his extremely bitchy then wife were regulars. The ball team must have had an account there because they came in after games, practices, etc in a group. The team, collectively, was a huge pain in the ass for whatever server had them since they were royalty there, and acted it. Once I got the short straw and had to deal with these entitled shits. They were so snotty. One of them demanded more powdered sugar for his waffle. I asked the cook for more. He gave it to me on a plate in 3 lines. I thought it was absolutely hilarious, because it was pretty well known these perfect little shits were using. I took it to the table that way. They went ballistic on me. Demanded to see the manager. I got a stern talking to but was not fired. There was no lawsuit. Life went on. Because young people do stupid things which in the moment seem hilarious. It should not be job ending.

Re: A Public Lashing is Appropriate
I'm inclined to think that the average 16 year old who ends up working at Starbucks may have little idea what ISIS is. They haven't been in the news much recently and 3 or 4 years ago when they were all over the place, s/he was 13.
I.e., more likely due to ignorance than malevolence.

CP--you could be right but if this statement is true "The term ISIS, he said, is sometimes used by middle- and high-school age children as a racial slur around the Twin Cities, which has a large East African and Somali Muslim population." (and it sounds specious to me), then it could easily b deliberate; kind of like putting Sambo on a black person's cup). As @W suggests, assigning numbers (or evemn initials) could avoid this.
Re: A Public Lashing is Appropriate
I’m not saying it wasn’t used as a racist term only that someone of that age may (probably doesn’t) not fully understand what that means. And being a stupid teenager does not necessarily require termination especially if it was a first offense. A responsible supervisor could have both disciplined the employee and made restitution to the customer. Instead he reinforced the bad behavior and minimized the customer.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.
Re: A Public Lashing is Appropriate
My question (and I guess a lot of other people's) is whether he used it as a racist term. FWIW, I doubt individuals were called "isis" anymore than individual Italians might be called "mafia"--groups maybe, but not individuals. Perhaps he used it because he thought it was a joke, but it's an odd word to use innocently--I think he expected her to react negatively. does it warrant discmissal? For a first offense, I agree it does not.
As for the supervisor, yes he minimized her concern, but I wouldn't be surprised if that is how he was trained to respond--say it was a mistake with the name and try to deflect blame. In this litigious society people are often taught to never admit fault but respond and apologize in a diplomatic way.

Trained to have her escorted out by security?!

Bobby was the least contentious one of the group. He was quiet, polite, didn't run you to death for things and tipped generously. I waited on him probably 2 x with no issue. No one else complained about him that I heard. Of course don't go all warm and fuzzy about the man, he is a Trump supporter, and famously equated some basketball issue to rape, "if it's inevitable, just lay back and enjoy it". So yuck. Now that I am older and take things like this with no grain of salt, I would dump the hot soup du jour over his lap.
Re: A Public Lashing is Appropriate
He also was pretty well known for courtside antics. Maybe a nice guy one on one, but he had a temper.
Re: A Public Lashing is Appropriate
You are assuming that you know nothing about this kid or her or problems. As far as you know, she could have a high-frequency hearing loss. I suspect you have never heard of such a thing, but I can ensure you it is real. It can make g sound like d; it can turn a gig line into a dick line. And the Islamic lady seems like a self-centered asshole that thinks the world revolves around her. The U.S. is an English speaking country if she wants to be understood next time she should say bob. What in the hell does it matter; she is not buying a car. And why didn’t she slowly spell out the name? Because SHE WANTS TO BE AN ASSHOLE.BoSoxGal wrote: ↑Thu Jul 09, 2020 4:57 amA 16 year old today is very likely not to know those last two facts.Econoline wrote: ↑Thu Jul 09, 2020 4:54 amSince when can a present-day teenager spell anything correctly, let alone a "commonly known"(???) name like "Aishah"?
(BTW, Isis was an Egyptian goddess. And a Bob Dylan song.)
Misspelling something that sounds like Aishah is one thing, but ISIS doesn’t sound like Aishah.
And I keep getting gut punched by the shit I have to read from folks on this board. The callousness toward BIPOC and the excuse making for racism is very fucking disheartening.

I expected to be placed in an air force combat position such as security police, forward air control, pararescue or E.O.D. I would have liked dog handler. I had heard about the dog Nemo and was highly impressed. “SFB” is sad I didn’t end up in E.O.D.

It annoys me too, mostly because they never get my name right (even when I spell it), so I have gone to an easy to say and spell pseudonym. They can’t spell “Kate” either.TPFKA@W wrote: ↑Thu Jul 09, 2020 5:15 amI am really annoyed by the whole concept of being asked my name when ordering my white chocolate mocha. I have taken to saying my name is "Bob" or "Cklem", with a silent K, and since there could be more than one Bob or Cklem in the store at a time it would make more sense to assign numbers to the order and call it when the order is ready.
Thank god for mobile ordering. I zip in, pick up my cup, and don’t even have to speak to the teens (except to throw a “thank you” in their general direction).
