Blimey! I didn't think of that one! (Or was that just a personal suggestion?)

If you're bored Ray, I read there's an opening or two available this week.

Today's little snow event put us at the 2nd snowiest winter of all time. We're closing in on 100 inches of snow!! Might as well go for the record now.

Well, in the Civilized Lands (i.e. east of Toledo, OH) your wimpy 107 inch record pales besides our 118. And your annual average is wimpy too. Mind you, your last few weeks far exceeded anything that Cleveland's ever enjoyed; well done :ok I don't envy any of the stats in either place. Why on earth do we live in such inhospitable climes?

I can't speak for Ohio, MGM, but here, even in the brutality of storms and cold, it is incredibly beautiful:

And then there is the even more beautiful season:

I guess 118 inches is a lot for one of your little Eastern states. Kinda pales compared to 879 inches out here where the West is best:

http://www.nps.gov/crla/faqs.htm

Crater Lake
How much snow does the park get and does it ever go away?

The average snowfall at Crater Lake is 533 inches every year. That's about 44 feet. The greatest cumulative snowfall for one season was 879 inches (73 feet) the winter of 1932-33. The greatest depth on the ground at one time was 258 inches (21½ feet) the winter of 1983. Most of the snow usually melts by the beginning of August, although after particularly heavy seasons, there are drifts that fail to melt before the snows return again in the early Fall.

Nice work!

Then again, this is beautiful but I'd not want to lock myself up in a cage with it for three/four months every year...

... not that we'd get to "every" of course

Um, apples and oranges. First, Crater Lake is at 7000-8000 feet of elevation. Boston is at sea level. Significant climactic differences. Mount Washington (NH) at 5000 feet records about 300 inches of snow annually. Medford, OR - the closest "large" city to Crater Lake - only gets about 3 inches of snow/year, and the largest amount it ever recorded was 31 inches.

Second, no one lives at Crater Laker. There are no roads. There is no need (and no ability) to move the snow. There are 8 million people living and working in the Boston metro area. We need to get to work, we need to get to the doctor, we need to get to the grocery store.

Third, as for living where the "west is best" the average annual precipitation in Santa Cruz is 31.53 inches. All rain. No snow. If you lived out here, you would have been crying and rolled up into a little ball several weeks ago.

Because of the weather, Ithaca NY's website says it has thrown in the towel and is telling people to go to Key West Florida rather than come to Ithaca.

Yeah, but aside from that, you have to admit it's a splendidly relevant comparison... 8-)

... not to mention that people from... oh, the 1930s... would have been begging for euthanasia if they even heard of snow.

Get ready for another big freeze. Woke up to 32F and it's been falling since. Yesterday was a balmy 40F. Almost took a snooze in my hammock. ;)

We got snow, slush, snow, fjreezing rain overnight saturday-sunday. Nice mess to shovel.

Over 100 inches (officially) with tonight's snowfall - and heading for the record next week with a mid-week storm potential!

No place to put the snow? Here's an idea:
Massachusetts man selling, shipping snow from his yard
POSTED 8:26 PM, FEBRUARY 24, 2015, BY AP WIRE

MANCHESTER-by-the-SEA, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts man has found a way to profit from the several feet of snow in his yard: He’s shipping it to people in warmer climates for the bargain price of $89 for six pounds.

Kyle Waring, of Manchester-by-the-Sea, got the idea while shoveling snow earlier this winter and launched ShipSnowYo.com.

At first he shipped 16.9-ounce snow-filled bottles for $19.99, but he found the snow melted by the time it arrived at its destination.

So he came up with a new plan, selling six pounds at a time. He tells Boston.com even if the snow melts a little by the time it arrives, the package can still make 10 to 15 snowballs.

He’s also started offering 10-pound packages for $119.

He says he’ll keep selling until people stop ordering.

Thanks! We're fine. While it's been extremely cold and snowy (obvs), the storms seem to be diminishing in severity and no one is really traveling or working on storm days. The good news is the sun will eventually win out!

GUIN. FUN FACT

Do you know seawater freezes at about 28.4 degrees Fahrenheit and that it contains approx. 3.5% by weight of sodium chloride? However, ocean salinity varies globally and the salinity factor plays a major role on currents and behavior.
