You posted "major police department in the country".
I would imagine some of those tin-horn law men in small towns are some of the worst.
A badge and a gun and they think they can run their own little fiefdom.
Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.
For starters: end police unions and require that ALL officers wear body cameras. They should be running every second of every minute of every shift, and deactivating them in any way should be a felony bringing mandatory prison time.

They aren't...officially. But they might well call for backup...and not get it...and they know that!

Seems the top dog (ex sufflok county police chief, resigned a few months ago) has been arrested (bail denied) for beating a suspect who stole a gun belt and duffel bag from his SUV. He went and cleared the interogation room and beat the guy, only stopping when one of the officers came into the room and stopped him. Then he had the detectives and such assist in covering it all up. Even went so far as to threaten the perp (an addict at the time) with a "hot shot" if he ever told about the beating. There are a few more things he did concerning the case but they escape me.
I believe the feds are involved also.
Death by vivisection is not painful enough for him. That entire department needs to be purged: shit-can EVERYONE, blacklist them for life, and start over.

I agree, especially after my own experiences with small town LEOs.
Make it a very large division, DOJ.
