It's not a Canadian storm. It's a Nor'easter. It came from the South.

As for the travel bans, understand DC-Balt-Philly are getting 24-36 inches. That is record snowfall. They don't have the equipment to handle it. Keeping the roads clear will make snow removal much easier because there should be fewer stranded cars. Plus at that rate of snowfall is very difficult to keep the roads clear enough for safe driving. Finally, these are blizzard conditions - 35 plus mph winds for more than an hour, whiteout conditions. No one except necessary personnel should be out.

We did it all last winter in Boston and yes we can drive in the snow.

Well, we've got about a foot of snow on the ground so far in South Jersey and it's supposed to keep snowing until early tomorrow morning; will top out between 18 and 24 inches, they say. I think that's enough to qualify.

That video of DC is as slow as watching Congress doing something relevant.

Snow has almost reached my car hood -- maybe 23" +/-. I have enough food available for a week so there's no need to go all "Donner Party" yet. I'm fine... unless there is an extended power outage.

So it's a racist storm...

I have to say I was rather impressed with Governor Christie's press conference earlier...

He's been getting attacked for not spending enough time in New Jersey, but he showed himself to be completely in command of this situation...

He knew exactly what each part of his state was facing from this storm; he explained in a very lucid, calm and detailed way what was being done, location by location, fielded every question knowledgeably and with ease, and he did it all extemporaneously, without a teleprompter, or a single written note, or having to defer to someone else to give an answer...

I think Chris helped himself a lot today...

(You know, with that other thing...)

yeah, he made a meal out of that press conference, didn t he? 8-)

he , the blasé oaf, and cuomover (the three nannies) all had grandstanding press conferences.

the fishing pier at OC Md was demolished.

the coast is gonna be a real mess from the mouth of the Chesapeake all the way to cape cod.

tomorrow the news will be bad, locally , all up and down the east coast.

The morning tides are higher than the evening tides right now. We are at a 9 1/2 foot tide tonight plus a couple feet storm surge. Tomorrow morning a10 1/2 foot tide and 3-4 foot storm surge.

NJ looks terrible. So does then MD/VA coast, especially Chincoteague. I've got a friend stranded there right now.

Winds gusting up to 80 mph on the South MA coast and islands. Crazy.

And LJ - all these big coastal storms are nor'easters. They have huge drops in pressure at their center causing high winds that can reach or exceed hurricane force.

I hope your friend is ok. the local news hasn t been covering much yet.

the constant onshore flow all day may end up making this evening tide very very high.

Yeah, it's a damn shame Trumpy didn't get involved...

All he would have had to do was walk out on onto the shore and say:

"Hey Jonas! I'm Donald Trump and I'm tellin' you to get the hell out of here you loser stupid storm!"

"I've got people calling me and tweeting me...(people who are in favor of other massive storms) thanking me for this"...

If you elect me we won't have any more storms like this; believe me, I'll just get it done...

Mother Nature is kind of a bitch (I don't believe that, but I heard it.... other people are saying that, not me....I'm just telling you what other people have said...)

wesw has a problem with mostly all punctuation marks yet he manages to use an acute diacritical mark with apparently no effort. I'm starting to believe he may very well be a brilliant and tenured professor at Wesley College. A regular Charles Kingsfield. Oddly, my head no longer feels quite so mushy when I read his, er, commentary.

Oldr, Sue, BigRR, all hanging in there with the storm? Hope you're warm, dry, and safe.

I'm supposed to drive back to NY tomorrow on the MassPike; wondering if that's a good idea? Anybody know what interior Mass is experiencing? They have no snow at my sister's in the Poughkeepsie area.

It will be fine. The storm had a very tight snow/pressure gradient that just about followed the curve of 495 and out along 90 line. So while there is a foot of snow in New Bedford/Falls Church, Worcester got about three inches and Amherst nothing.

Sentinels Continue Guarding Tomb of the Unknowns

Despite the severe winter storm currently raking the northeast, Tomb Sentinels are still standing their post as the protectors of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.  Arlington Cemetery may be closed to the public due to the weather, but that will not prevent members of the US Army's 3rd Infantry Regiment ('The Old Guard') from continuing to carry on and do their duty throughout the storm.

It's examples like this that makes me believe that the concept of "Semper Fideles" is not something exclusive and unique to the Marines — no disrespect intended to any current or former members of the USMC when I say that.

It was a coastal storm...should be fine. Southern RI got a foot, Providence got 5. I expect everything to be clear by later today, never mind tomorrow.

IF THE SNOW DISAPPEARED...

Post by RayThom »

... it would be a very pleasant winter's day here in Kennett Square PA. I was just outside on my porch watching the plow trucks, and the apartment sup'r. clearing the sidewalks with the snowblower. With the sun beating down I stood there in my slippers, Lululemons, and t-shirt and felt much more warm than chilly.

If the weather pattern keeps progressing like this I'll be able to get to my car before the end of the week. And life is good.

We made it through. Two feet total by my very unofficial measurement. I cleared the driveway saturday afternoon/evening and I wust of upset the air currents. Where on saturday the snow was pretty much even, Suday I had a four foot drift on the side where I had piled all the snow. Snow blower was hte machine of this storm and it worked great. Helped two neighbors with the snow (one a former POW in Nam). I was clearing the end of my driveway and I kept seeing him sholvel a bit then rest then shovel then rest. So I went down that, told him to relax and cleared out in front of his driveway then cleared the rest of his driveway. Did the same for the guy next door to me (he had a hernia operation over hte summer).

God invented engines for a reason.

Hope everyone else in the path made it ok. Funny thing, it's winter and it snows. Someone should alert the media.
:ok  :nana
