I’m reading through all the opened tabs on my smartphone and wanted to share this piece as some might find it interesting:

128 and counting dead by Helene; many hundreds missing or unaccounted for in North Carolina where entire towns have been decimated along with roads and other infrastructure. Did y’all see that whole hospital in Tennessee get swallowed by flood waters?

This is the new normal, people. Welcome aboard the chaos ship climate change.

Are people waking up?

No. They're blaming Democrats for not allowing them to build bigger seawalls and levees in "sensitive areas". Because paving the floodplains is how to solve flooding....

And there is a large possibility that the guy who says it's all a Chinese hoax will be elected president in November. It is not absurd to say that the survival of humanity for more than a generation is at stake.

I hadn't seen that quote from Jim Hansen - in my darker moments I wonder if it is already too late.

I read on this issue extensively; my take is that climate scientists know that absent massive shifts in how the global economy functions, for which there is no political will, it is too late.

But you can’t say it’s too late because because.

I am relieved that I didn’t have children. People in North Carolina are struggling to find water after drowning under massive floods of water. This is the world we are leaving our progeny and it will only get much, much worse.

Milton is screaming across the supercharged hot Gulf as a Cat 5 monster that will hit Tampa Bay "with a catastrophic storm surge never before seen in this area" - NBC climate/weather division.

I recall a few hurricanes back, a few years ago, seeing a piece on one of the news channels about the vulnerabilities of Tampa Bay to exactly this kind of monster direct hit. My stomach is already clenched with anxiety and there are days to wait to see how awful the awful will be.

Never mind the years of awful to come for the folks already savaged by Helene.

Climate change - so much fun.

If that's a picture of Tampa General Hospital, it may not be as bad as it looks:
As a new storm forms in the Gulf of Mexico, threatening the Florida Peninsula again, we can expect Tampa General Hospital (TGH) to activate its hurricane preparations quickly.

The hospital takes a wide-ranging approach to ensure continued patient care, no matter what comes their way.

TGH’s hurricane plan was tested – and proven successful – during last month’s Hurricane Helene.

During Helene, Tampa Bay faced a reported seven-foot storm surge, according to the National Weather Service. But the AquaFence, an integral part of TGH’s hurricane preparations, kept the water at bay from the nearly 100-year-old hospital on Davis Islands.

Inside, patients continued to receive the world-class care for which they turned to Tampa General.

On Monday, Sept. 23, as forecasts projected Helene would become a hurricane and likely bring severe winds and rains to the Gulf Coast of Florida, Tampa General Vice President of Facilities and Construction Dustin Pasteur began setting up the AquaFence around the perimeter of the hospital.

An AquaFence is a water-impermeable barrier that can withstand storm surges up to 15 feet above sea level and 130-mile-per-hour winds. It requires a team of 60 and three days to complete installation before a storm.

In an interview with CNN, Pasteur shared that Tampa General’s proactive storm mitigation efforts are essential for the Hospital to continue providing care. TGH is the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center.

“We’ve got some of the most critical patients in the region in this hospital, and we have a lot of them,” said Pasteur. “So, we’ve always designed this building to be resilient and be able to protect in place.”

Tampa General first purchased AquaFence in 2019, and Helene was its biggest test to date. As the tide rose and Tampa Bay flooded Davis Islands, the AquaFence proved successful.

Don't get me wrong, most of the coastal regions of America's Dingus are inappropriate for urban development and human habitation, and I expect will be even less hospitable over the next century. I would think we should be doing everything possible to disincentivize living in areas prone to environmental catastrophes.

For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

When Milton hits with a predicted 15' storm surge in Tampa Bay and likely Cat 3 winds at minimum, Aqua Fence will have its greatest test. Here's a TikTok I found which shows the fence: https://www.tiktok.com/@terrenceconcann ... 7770738975

This is the scary simulation that Tampa Bay created in long term planning for a Cat 5 hurricane like Milton could still possibly be.

Here's the source page for the project: https://tbrpc.org/phoenix/

The simulation video doesn't have an embed link, but it's the smaller one down a bit on the first page of the Phoenix project page.

Every generation has had its challenges, horrors and crises. No one ever got to choose what their tests would be. In the depression we had 27% unemployment and people in an agricultural paradise, California, died by the thousands of starvation. Shameful. Slightly later our children, 18 to 24 year olds threw their bodies on the pyre to remove fascism from our world. This is the meaning of life.
