Of course. I took a gander at the dictionary before writing it.

(I guess someone thinks ignorant means stupid, which it doesn't)

where I m from "ignorant" is used as a general insult reserved for the worst of the assholes. people who are generally ignorant of how to behave as a civilized human being.

when someone is "getting ignorant" a fight of some kind may follow....

I've honestly never heard them called Canadian geese, only Canada geese. That accounts for my experience in New England, New York and Montana where there are abundant.

People who use the label ignorant as an insult are stupid.

See what I did there? ;)

OFFS I don't have a superiority complex. I have an inferiority complex. But it's not all that complex - just kind of inferior.

Maybe it's the way I've insulted no one here but have been on the receiving end of all kinds of foul abuse and language from you.

They're Canada geese. Live with it.

And this should be the swan song of this loony discussion.

BSG--my experience has been exactly the opposite, until this thread, I've never heard them called Canada geese, pretty much In the same areas--New England and NY as well and NJ Pennsylvania and won the coast to Virginia. I guess we just don't know the same people.

Well, however we say the name (correctly or incorrectly), there's certainly no need to quill each other

Yeah, I dunno why that is. I'm not arguing just to argue, I've given that up. I almost didn't weigh in, because I don't wish to be personally attacked by @w. However, that is the truth of my experience.

I started into birding when I was knee high to a grasshopper, my grandmother was an amateur ornithologist and avid birder, and at University of Maine I had several friends whose field biology studies were of birds. If I had it to do over, I would have continued in Zoology with a focus on birds myself, and I have a whole shelf of my bookcases that is nothing but birding books/ornithological texts, etc.

I will say that I've not had occasion to discuss my love of birds with many, many people - but in my family anyway we always called them Canada geese, that was what I heard them called by friends at uni, and here in Montana where we have abundant Canada geese, I've only heard them called that.

Anecdotal evidence from all of us, so not by any means definitive as to common usage.

That being said, the correct term is clearly Canada geese, not Canadian geese, and it's true that anyone who calls them the latter is simply ignorant (a term without judgment, in correct usage) of the correct term, and likely simply following his/her experience of what s/he's heard from others in life.

I don't see why Meade needs vilifying for simply pointing out the correct nomenclature, nor why @w is so pissed off that he has.

But I've long since given up trying to figure out what makes @w so angry.

eta: from this blog: http://languagehat.com/canadian-geese/
The vast majority of English speaking people call the goose that is large and has a black head—Branta canadensis—a Canadian Goose. However, its original name was a CANADA Goose.
So apparently folks like Meade and me are simply old-school, and those who use the Canadian goose label are in the majority. No skin off my nose. :)

That, or just doesn't accept that Canada Geese is the "correct" term for whatever reason. That might be called pigheaded or foolish, but not ignorant. And, of course, in Canada they just call them geese. :D
