Florida teen charged in death of bullied girl after turning a friend of the victim against her: authorities

Guadalupe Shaw, 14, and another girl were charged with felony aggravated stalking in the suicide death of 12-year-old Rebecca Sedwick, who jumped off a tower last month. Sedwick's tormentors were relentless in their bullying, police said, and Shaw even wrote a heartless message on Facebook after the girl died.

A 14-year-old Florida girl accused of bullying her former schoolmate into suicide had turned a friend of the victim into a bully, too, authorities said Tuesday.

The two girls were charged Monday night with felony aggravated stalking in the death of 12-year-old Rebecca Sedwick, and were released into their parents' custody.

Sedwick was bullied relentlessly for several months before she jumped to her death from a tower at a nearby abandoned concrete plant in Lakeland, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

The 14-year-old, identified as Guadalupe Shaw, reportedly posted a coldhearted message on Facebook after Sedwick's suicide — prompting cops to arrest her.

The implicating post said, "Yes ik I bullied Rebecca nd she killed her self but IDGAF [I don't give a (expletive)]."

As many as 15 girls "terrorized" Sedwick for several months with messages such as "You should die" and "Why don't you go kill yourself," but Shaw and a 12-year-old girl are the only ones that have been charged so far. The sheriff's office released the name of the 12-year-old, but it is the Daily News' policy not to identify minors.

"Detectives have determined that on Sept. 10, 2013, Rebecca Sedwick committed suicide by jumping from a concrete silo tower to her death, and that the malicious harassment by (the 12-year-old girl) and Shaw was likely a contributing factor in Rebecca’s decision to commit suicide," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

Witnesses told investigators that Shaw harassed Sedwick by calling her ugly, told her to "drink bleach and die," and suggested that she should kill herself. Shaw's animosity may have stemmed from the fact that a boyfriend of hers had previously dated Sedwick.

"Several students corroborated stories of both girls bullying Sedwick on different occasions, through name-calling, intimidation, threats to beat her up and at least one actual physical fight," the sheriff's office said. "Shaw also reportedly bullied anyone who was friends with Rebecca."

That includes the unidentified 12-year-old girl, who apparently was convinced by the older Shaw to beat up Sedwick.

In December, Sedwick cut her wrists and was hospitalized for three days, authorities said. She eventually transferred out of Crystal Lake Middle School, but the torrid online bullying continued after she left.

After her death, authorities examined her computer and found search queries for "what is overweight for a 13-year-old girl," "how to get blades out of razors" and "how many over-the-counter drugs do you take to die."

I don't know what the maximum is that can be given to this pig, but if it's just being held in detention till she's 21 and having the rest of her life ruined, I'm good with that, (she'll be getting off easy...maybe she'll get so depressed that she kills herself..that would be justice...)

Maybe rube or Dave will stop by this thread to tell us how this tormented 12 year old jumping to her death was all for the best...

Mom of girl charged in Florida bullying suicide arrested on child abuse charges

Polk County, Fla., Sheriff's Office

The charges against Vivian Lee Vosburg are separate from the investigation into her daughter's alleged involvement in bullying a Florida, authorities stressed.

The mother of one of the two girls facing charges over the suicide of a bullied 12-year-old Florida girl was jailed Friday on child abuse charges in a case authorities say is unrelated to the felony case against her daughter.

Vivian Lee Vosburg, 30, of Lakeland was being held without bond in the Polk County Jail on two counts of child abuse with bodily harm and four counts of child neglect, the sheriff's office said.

Vosburg is the mother of one of two girls who are charged with third-degree felony stalking in the suicide of Rebecca Sedwick, 12, who jumped to her death from a third-story cement plant structure in central Florida last month after having been verbally, physically and cyber bullied throughout 2012 and 2013.

Both girls have been released into their parents' custody, and authorities stressed that the case announced Friday is unrelated to that investigation.

According to the sheriff's affidavit, deputies acting on several tips identified Vosburg on a video posted to Facebook showing a woman punching and screaming profanities at two 12-year-old boys who had been fighting.

Four other children are seen in the video, which was posted in July by one of the children, investigators said. The sheriff's office said Vosburg has "access" to all six children.

According to the affidavit, Vosburg told investigators Thursday that she was the woman in the video and acknowledged punching one of the boys in the face and the other in the back of the head and shoulders. She said she knew she shouldn't have hit them, according to the affidavit.

Sheriff Grady Judd said the was still on Facebook as recently as Friday morning.

"This clearly indicates to us that this appears to be a normal way of life," Judd said at a news conference. "They're laughing and cussing and throwing the F-bomb around, then they're posting that conduct for all to see."

Of Vosburg's daughter, he said: "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree."

Vosburg was held pending a preliminary court appearance Saturday morning. She shook her head "no" when she was asked whether she had any comment as she was taken in handcuffs to be booked Friday.

My daughter-in-law is a public school teacher, and she often brings home stories of girls (yes, it's mainly girls) who perpetually harrass (I'm not sure what "bullying" actually means) classmates through social media. And, she says, they are like sharks smelling blood, as they "pile on" when they see that the victim is taking it badly.

This is a grotesque failure of parenting, but never having raised a girl I can't say how I would react if my kid were on either end of the harrassment. I would hope that I'd have the wisdom to intervene.

Nevertheless, it's difficult to place this at an appropriate place in the spectrum of criminal victimization. As culpable as the perpetrator of an assault? Aggravated assault? Homicide? Hard to say. Did the victim have "other problems"?
