New Mexico boy, 12, shoots 2 classmates at school

ROSWELL, N.M. (AP) — A 12-year-old New Mexico boy drew a shotgun from a band-instrument case and shot and wounded two classmates at his middle school Tuesday morning before a teacher talked him into dropping the weapon and he was taken into custody, officials and witnesses said.

A boy was critically injured and a girl was in satisfactory condition following the shooting at Berrendo Middle School in Roswell.

Gov. Susana Martinez said the students were in the gym, where they typically hang out before classes start during cold and inclement weather. The 12-year-old pulled a shotgun and opened fire there at about 8 a.m.

However, he was "quickly stopped by one staff member who walked right up to him and asked him to set down the firearm, which he did," Martinez said at a news conference.

Superintendent Tom Burris said the school's faculty had participated in "active shooter" training, and they responded appropriately Tuesday.

"In the 10 seconds that transpired from the time of this thing starting until the teacher had control of the weapon, there was no cowardice," Burris said. "There was protection for our kids. Everyone acted and did their duties today at Berrendo Middle School."

Officials at University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas, said an 11-year-old boy was flown there in critical condition and a 13-year-old girl arrived in serious condition. Her condition was upgraded to satisfactory Tuesday evening.

Information from nurses treating the boy indicates he was the shooter's target, hospital spokesman Eric Finley said. There was some confusion about the boy's age, but Finley said his parents told the hospital he is 11.

The governor said a staff member received very minor injuries but declined medical care because he wanted to stay and help.

Berrendo eighth grader Odiee Carranza said she was walking to the school gym when the suspect bumped into her as he rushed past. She told him to be careful, and he apologized and continued on. The boy ran to the gym, where he pulled a gun from a band instrument case and fired at the students.

"Then he shot up in the sky, then dropped the gun, and then some teacher grabbed the kid that had the gun," Carranza said.

Carranza described the shooter as a "smart kid and a nice kid."

Student Gabby Vasquez said the boy who was shot "was really nice, got along with everybody." Hospital officials said Tuesday afternoon that the 11-year-old underwent surgery but was still in critical condition.

State Police Chief Pete Kassetas said the investigation was in the early stages, and authorities were still looking into a possible motive. He estimated more than 100 students and faculty members needed to be interviewed.

"I don't have a lot of answers as of yet," Kassetas said, adding police believe they have the only individual responsible for the shooting in custody. The suspect's name was not released.

"I want to make sure the community knows there's really nobody else out there," Kassetas said.

A statement from the state police said authorities responded at 8:11 a.m. The school was placed on lockdown and children were bused to a nearby mall, where parents picked them up.

At the mall, parents waited anxiously. Some held hands, while others hugged each other.

Classes were later canceled and won't resume until Thursday.

Two prayer services were scheduled for Tuesday night at Roswell's Calvary Baptist and First Baptist churches. Pastor Chris Mullennix of Calvary Baptist said parents were worried and heartbroken, but there was a sense among many he spoke with that the community would be able to come together.

"This is something that strikes people to the core," he told The Associated Press. "We're not talking about a flesh wound or just a mental wound. We're talking about the very souls of people being shaken and rocked by something like this."

Mullennix said the prayer services will start the healing process.

"This is tragic but yet people in Roswell are tough, and people in Roswell will recover because we do have a sense of community, and I think that's really important," he said.

In the hours after the shooting, social media sites were flooded with sentiments offering prayers for the community. Some Berrendo students posted on their Facebook sites that they were frightened and didn't want to return to classes.

"I'm still scared to go back to school," Carranza said.

Roswell has a population of about 50,000. It is a center for ranching and farming, and is home to the New Mexico Military Institute, the only state-supported military college in the West. The city is perhaps best-known as the site of an alleged UFO crash in 1947.

Roswell, NM Shooting is a Hoax

Regarding the Roswell supposed school shooting, this, too, has all the hallmarks of a hoax. The news anchors demand that the parents do the bidding of the DHS hierarchy, stating “Do not go” to the school and instead just go and wait at the mall. What self-respecting, child-loving parent would do this? And if so, who would do so without creating a storm?

It’s a drill with the standard methodology of a drill. The activities started at 7:40 or so a.m., a standard tactic of these DHS-inspired scams.

The supposed shooter is in custody, another standard. As is typical of the lie, first it was three injured, then, four, then, it was settled on only two injured.

Here is some of the typical commentary of this fake shooting:

A middle school student opened fire in his gym with a shotgun today and critically wounded two students in Roswell, N.M., according to authorities.

The injured were a 13-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy who were “simply sitting in their gym waiting to go to class,” New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez said. The shooting occurred shortly before class was to begin at Berrendo Middle School.

The Governors are always in on it. Is Martinez signed on for Bloomberg’s gun-grubbing cabal? Regardless, it is always certain that it is a hoax when these vehicles are seen, especially at 8:00 a.m.:

It's quite a website...a lot of , uh, "unique" perspectives...
Did someone by the name of 'Steve' write your linked article?
Now there's a coincidence, Joe...

I also immediately thought of Steve, especially when I checked out the "Purpose and Goals" section:
Our mission is to provide information that isn’t twisted. To provide pure facts. To provide intelligent commentary on the facts. To never distort the facts. This is so people can make up their own minds, without corruption. Another purpose is to unravel deception and disinformation, so that a true understanding can be achieved. This is so people can compare the false information with real and uncompromised information.

Hence the name, "Nodisinfo"...

I hope the shotgun owner who left this gun and ammunition unsecured is sued for everything he has or will ever earn in his lifetime.

Did I miss something? How is a school shooting funny? I don't think anyone was killed, but two students were pretty seriously injured. I usually can find the humor in most things, but not in shooting kids. :shrug

I'm sorry I missed the memo that said that we should take "theories" about how the shooting was a hoax with undue sincerity since kids were (or weren't) involved

CP--No memo, and people can write what they want. But not all the joking posts were limited to saying the shooting was a hoax (see the two immediate to my posting, e.g.). If you think it's funny fine; I just don't.

Yes on was a comment only tangentially related to the discussion and one responding to the thoughtlessness of that post. Not one post making light of the shooting.

FWIW, my reaction is the same as CP's; I don't see one post here poking fun at the shooting.

NRA advice= "The only way to stop a bad 12-year old with a shotgun is a good 12-year old with a shotgun."

NRA advice #2= "Outlawing guns for 12-year olds means that only outlaw 12-year olds will have guns."

NRA advice #3= "It's the police's fault for not enforcing the laws keeping shotguns from children."

Jim and CP--I apologize for the way I worded my post, but what I meant to say is that an act as tragic as this should not be a cuase to engage in humorous statements related to it. Granted the only ones about it (or its potential aftermath and participants) were the two immediately preceding my first post and the totally inappropriate post of rubato this morning, but I just don't see a thing as this as something that humor should even be associated with.

But that's just me; as I said, people can post and carry on as they see fit.

Security people, armed or unarmed may have prevented it.
NRA advice #2= "Outlawing guns for 12-year olds means that only outlaw 12-year olds will have guns."
Don't know about New Mexico laws, but I doubt it is legal for a 12yo to go out and buy a gun. As far as the legality of him "using" a gun, I would guess the law states he must be with an adult (while hunting, target shooting etc).
NRA advice #3= "It's the police's fault for not enforcing the laws keeping shotguns from children."
Don't think it's the polices fault for not enforcing a law. I would guess they confiscated the gun when they saw the law being broken.

Are you advocating there be more laws written concerning childrens use of guns? If so please elaborate.

I do agree with your point about going after the owner of the gun if it was not properly secured. But we do not know whether it was or was not properly secured so this is all speculation.
