More bitchin' about the weather

Post by TPFKA@W »

BTW it is still fracking unpleasantly wintery here. Blowing and drifting presently, whiteout conditions here and there, warmer today but by Tuesday the high will be 0 Fahrenheit.

I heard they are actually thinking of changing the Superbowl to another date because those supposedly tough easterners can't deal. Hey I recall a football game outside in Greenbay played when it was -17F. Are folks becoming wussies or what?

Nothing but sun here through to the weekend, getting up to 40c / 104 f during the week.

We're off down the coast next Saturday for a week, staying here, taking the puppies for their first experience of the sea.

Only 33c here but the humidity factor is very wearing. As are the insects

Ditto...

67 at the moment, headed up to the low 70's yet again...

Shortly I'll be taking the kids and the pooches down for another romp on the beach, and we'll be picking up sushi for dinner...(anybody care to give me a lecture about how cruelly tuna and salmon are treated? :P )

We're having absolutely kick-ass gorgeous weather, day after day, but there's a cruel irony to it...

We're experiencing the driest winter in the history of record keeping in California; this is going to result in a huge spike in water rates, as well as having an enormous impact on the price of produce...To say nothing of the wild fire potential...

So when I walk out into the yard, and feel the light breeze and the warm sun on my face, I feel more foreboding than pleasure...this marvelous weather is really quite terrible for us...

But on the other hand, as long as we've got this kind of weather, as bad for us strategically as it may be, we might as well enjoy it...my sitting around bitching and moaning about it isn't going to make it rain...(As Lady Kelly has pointed out to me...)

So off to the beach, and then a stop for ice cream cones...

Since you asked so nicely...
High mortality rates, disease, and parasite infestations are common. Deformities and stress-related injuries are also a regular occurrence; on some farms, as many as 40 percent of the fish are blind—a problem that is not addressed because blind fish net the same profit for farmers.

Because they are designed to navigate vast oceans and use all their senses to do so, many fish go insane from the cramped conditions and lack of space on fish farms. The tight enclosures inhibit their ability to navigate properly and cause them to knock against each other and the sides of the enclosures. This jostling causes sores and damage to their fins.

To increase profits, fish farmers cram as many fish as possible into the smallest spaces possible. Salmon farms are so crowded—with as many as 50,000 individuals in each enclosure—that a 2.5-foot fish spends his or her entire life in a space the size of a bathtub. Trout farms are even more crowded, with as many as 27 full-grown fish in a bathtub-sized space.
Tuna are chased until they move into a tight group, and then a net is lowered around them. They are dragged against rocks and debris, and some fish suffocate from the sheer weight of other fish pressing against them. Large tuna are impaled on longlines—which are miles of barbed hooks that are left in the ocean for days at a time.

Think “swimming with the fishes” in reverse. “Hit men” dump smaller tuna onto ice, where they slowly freeze to death or are crushed when thousands of their schoolmates are piled on top of them. Tuna caught on longlines are beaten until they become unconscious before they are thrown into the freezer—and that’s if they haven’t already bled to death while struggling to free themselves!

Because fishing trawlers are increasingly emptying the seas of more and more of their inhabitants, fish are now being raised on “farms.” Small tuna are captured and dumped into netted pens. They are fattened on pellets of concentrated fish flesh and killed when they get big enough—if they don’t die first from the parasites and diseases that thrive in extremely crowded conditions.

“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.”

I prefer wild-caught minke whale, personally. Lovely. A lot more like steak than fish.

Got a couple of inches of snow saturday night. About 40F right now but it's supposed to go to single digits this afternoon/tonight.
I heard they are actually thinking of changing the Superbowl to another date because those supposedly tough easterners can't deal.
There is always a back up plan for the Superbowl, be it because of a snowstorm or a tornado or whatever. It's not becuase it's in the Meadowlands. It's the media making it more of a big deal than it really is. There was a SB played in Detroit a few years ago (5-10 years ago?) and there was a big snowstorm there. Players/teams/attendees were late getting there. Only difference was the players got to play indoors. Outside the storm raged on. If you ask the players they will say they will play in anything (as they do during the regular season and the playoffs).
Media hype. Nothing more, nothing less. Only thing that might look bad if the weather sucks is if many of the people who attend start hanging out in the various clubs around the lower and middle seating areas making the stadium look partially empty.
Now if the tickets went to "real" fans rather than the typical SB attendee, this would not be a problem.

Weather is predicted to be in the low thirties with rain/snow/sleet possible. Typical weather for this area.

Oh and LordJim :fu .

The super bowl should be in Green Bay.

That would be the historic choice.

Apparently there is the possibility of a huge amount of snow mid-next week. Some models running show that there could be more than 20 inches fall.

Come on spring.

Oh boy, that means we get it towards the end of the week. On the bright side it may go through near the lake house and that may get significant snowfall. Maybe soon I can go snowmobiling?!?!!?!?!?

Warming up a bit today. 30-something they say.

Weather for the SB is predicted to be mid 30's with a chance of some precipitation. Ran/snow/sleet or nothing at all.
We'll all find out on sunday evening.

Stay safe @W.

Please, take another look at the photo I posted of my home, encased in ice, and tell us again about easterners being wussies :nana
