Neknomination deaths: Craze ‘claims fifth victim’ as 20-year-old Bradley Eames is found dead after downing two pints of gin

Sunday 16 February 2014

The controversial Neknomination craze has reportedly led to the death of another young British man, after a rugby player mixed two pints of gin with teabags and said to the camera: “This is how you drink.”

Bradley Eames, 20, filmed himself downing the concoction in a matter of minutes, but complained of feeling ill shortly after and died four days later, the Mirror reported.

A friend told the newspaper about the video, and while police investigating the death said they were aware of its existence, they added that an initial post mortem had proved inconclusive.

The day Mr Eames’ body was found at his home in Nottingham, his stepmother Wendy Phelps-Eames reportedly posted a link on social media to another story about a Neknomination-related death and wrote: “You all need to stop now!”

A spokesperson for the Kaleidoscope alcohol awareness charity told the Mirror that two pints of gin was a “massive amount” to drink, effectively “playing Russian roulette”.

He said: “Government guidelines for alcohol consumption say 21 units a week for the average adult male.

“Here people are having more than that in one or two minutes. They are overloading their bodies.”

Mr Eames’ death comes after police said they planned to talk to the person who “Neknominated” Isaac Richardson, also 20, who went on to drink a cocktail of wine, whisky, vodka and lager.

Officers are also investigating the death of Stephen Brooks, 29, who collapsed after drinking three quarters of a litre of vodka in under a minute.

The Neknomination phenomenon, which like the “planking” craze before it appears to have originated in Australia, first claimed two lives in Ireland when 22-year-old Ross Cummins and 19-year-old Jonny Byrne were found dead in separate incidents at the start of February.

Two pints, to a non alcoholic, is a lot. Even for an alcoholic, drinking it in a few minutes would not bode well. Two pints in an hour is doable.

I wonder about the four day gap though.

Sadly, I know some who still do. But it doesn't take them a weekend.

A GROUP of Redruth women angry with the spread of the dangerous necknominate internet craze have started their own version - flashing bras to raise cash for charity instead of downing potentially deadly drinks.

Bangers to Cancer has been set by women who want to stamp-out the “ridiculous” Facebook-based necknominate fad, which involves people downing pints of alcohol, often filled with a disgusting item such as urine. It has led to several deaths in recent weeks.

Michelle Kent, 35, from Redruth, and her group of friends expose their clothed breasts to raise cash for Breast Cancer Care, a charity close to the heart of Ms Kent, whose mother died from the disease four-years-ago.

In their version of the nominate-style game, a person puts a photograph of themselves in their bra up on Facebook and nominates someone else to do the same.

Teabags? How vulgar!
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?

We used to do some serious drinking when I was in College, (Grain Punch was popular) but I have become such an old fuddy duddy that I have absolutely no idea what this "Neknomination" thing is even about...

(And fortunately, Tati is still a few years away from that sort "competitive" drinking experience...)

Read this sloooowly LJ (I did)
NekNomination is an internet drinking craze spread by social media which hit the headlines in early 2014. Thought to have originated in Australia, it involves someone completing a drinking dare - neck - then nominating someone else to go next. Videos of the dares are often posted online. Police have warned of the "catastrophic dangers" of getting involved.
