For science impact. Pretty good for a University which only started in the 1960s.

In the latest analysis of the world's top universities published by Times Higher Education (THE), UC Santa Cruz ranked second in research influence as measured by the number of times its faculty's published work is cited by scholars around the world.

Published as part of the THE World University Rankings 2013-14, the analysis, conducted by Thomson Reuters, measured overall research influence based on the average number of citations per paper, using a database of more than 50 million citations to 6 million journal articles published over five years, from 2007 to 2011.

With a citation score of 99.9, UC Santa Cruz has the same score as Rice University and is surpassed only by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with a score of 100. Other institutions with high citation scores were the California Institute of Technology at 99.8 and Princeton University at 99.7. UCSC's score of 99.9 is unchanged from the previous year's rankings. n describing their methodology, THE editors called the evaluation of research influence their "flagship" indicator. As explained on the web site for the World University Rankings, "it is the single most influential of the 13 indicators, and looks at the role of universities in spreading new knowledge and ideas."

UCSC's overall ranking in the THE World University Rankings for 2012-13 was 136th. It is one of eight UC campuses among the top 200 universities worldwide.

In the overall rankings by subject, UC Santa Cruz ranked 52nd in the physical sciences and 57th in life sciences worldwide.

It's the same scam as the MLB All-Star game really. Get the home crowd to send in the ballots. Obviously UCSC has obedient faculty who cite each others' work as often as possible, with rewards for leaving out MIT. Mind, they probably all do it but the UCSC ones happen to be more sycophantic. 52nd and 57th - well that's somethin' to shout about! :ok :geek:

#2 in research citations?

I note that UCSC's overall ranking is #136.

The University of Chicago ranks #9 overall.*..... :nana
(Meade: #10 and #20 in the subjects mentioned in which UCSC ranks #52 and #57.)

* Don't worry....I only say stuff like this when rubato gets too egotistical about UCSC. ;)

The University of Chicago is a very good school. It is 123 years old (UCSC is 50) and they operate the Argonne national laboratories (where my company has an annual conference which I was invited to present a poster at in 2012). They are best known for their economics department and have done a lot less in science impact than UCSC.

UCSC operates Lick observatory and benefits by a lot of ground-breaking work in astrophysics. They designed the Keck telescopes (10M by far the largest in the world) and invented adaptive optics (which have recently been used to control microscopy) and are currently working on the next generation of ground-based telescopes which will be about 30-40M and produce better images from the ground than Hubble does from space. As with any successful research program a lot of other organizations have joined them.

UCSC also developed the software used to sequence the human genome (and a great deal more since).

And the have the brilliant Harry Noller (who I took biochemistry from) who is short-listed for a Nobel for solving the structure of the ribosome. The ribosome is the site where mRNA and tRNA (whose structure he solved a long time ago) make proteins. And making proteins is a big part of how life works.

My wife and I although we both benefit from science educations support the arts at UCSC (most years).

Look, you don't know enough about this to even write plausible bullshit. Stop trying. You might bring joy to a sadistic moron like LJ but anyone who knows how this works will say "look, if it were possible to move up in the citation index just by citing each others papers the institutions with the most papers would always be at the top. Thus the "most cited" would always be the same as the "most published".

UCSC has done an amazing job because they love what they do and do it at the highest level in the world.

UCSC also had Tony Fink who began working on the 3-dimensonal structure of proteins, or 'protein folding' back in the 1970s. My wife worked in his lab as an undergraduate. I had him a a lecturer for one of the biochemistry series classes.

"Protein folding" is a big "basic science" problem because the 3-D structure of the active sites of enzymes (for one example) govern a lot of biochemical kinetics and energetics and thus a lot of basic biochemistry.

Tragically, Tony died a few years ago. But his graduate students and post-docs continue his work.

Now now, Jim has not posted in this thread so you have absolutely no reason to bring his name into this. To do so appears petty and childish. If you have a beef with Meade, keep it with Meade. You're certainly not making a good case for UCSC if yours is typical behaviour of their graduates...

Gee I thought that the smilies indicated how much that was indeed bullshit but obviously only to some. To correct another mistake in your comprehension of the English language (not to mention logic), it was clearly stated that all institutions probably engage in the same mutual ass-kissing but that some are better at it than others. Indeed, some may not pack the ballot-box at all.

There is no evidence that the publishing of "most papers" would result in the most selfies, other than in institutes of intense dishonesty.

If it were possible to move up in the citation index just by citing each others papers the institutions with the most papers that cited their own institution would always be at the top. Thus the 'most cited' would always be the same as the 'most dishonest'.

By the way, I attended a school that (pound for pound) produced more owners of Kennel club winning dogs than any other. I don't like to boast about it but there you go - obviously such canine greatness is greatly to my credit and demonstrates how supremely intelligent and superior I was to have attended that school. I also lived for a time quite close to Oxford and my long-time proximity to CWRU in Cleveland as well as the Cleveland School of Art redounds to my glory and honour. I'm thinking of standing on the street close to Howard to build some street cred in case I bump into Oliver Otis in heaven. Oh, did I mention my close association with heaven? I'm rather proud of that one. :nana

Funny.... I thought that anyone who calls himself a scientist would do research and gather information before claiming something is a fact.

The Keck telescopes are NOT the largest (optical telescopes) in the world. The largest optical telescope on earth is located in the Canary Islands in Las Palmas.

The place where you get all of your information - Wikipedia - can be a good point of reference in the hands of someone who knows how to do research.

You are an ignorant moron and would be an embarrassment to UCSC if anything you did mattered to them.

P.S. You remembered Argonne but forgot about Fermilab (and Fermi himself, for that matter)
