"I thought only black people got HIV"

A mother-of-three who had unprotected sex says she never dreamed she was at risk of HIV - because 'only African people could get it'.

Rachel Dilley, 48, developed the condition nearly a decade ago.

Appearing on ITV's This Morning to discuss her diagnosis, she said she hadn't realised at the time that 'white people had ever had it'.

She told amazed hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby that the risks had genuinely never crossed her mind.

She, "...developed the condition..."? What an odd formulation.

It is difficult to imagine someone so clueless as to hold this belief about the disease. She is the perfect juror for the American criminal justice system: profoundly ignorant and gullible.

But aside from her ignorance on the demographics of the disease, if she was infected with the HIV virus through a single incidence of conventional heterosexual intercourse - even with a stranger - she should play the Irish Sweepstakes. Her odds of winning are approximately the same as her odds of being infected thusly.

I think she'd have to become a citizen first. ITV...???

Education about STDs should be crafted and transmitted to reach a wider audience. The same is true of a lot of general health education topics.

In a developed country the probability of male-to-female transmission in a single act of vaginal intercourse in 1 in 1250, so once againm, your concept of probability (like when you compared it to being struck by lightening) leave somewhat to be desired.

If it was someone in the early months of infection when viral load is extremely higher, the risk is 10 times greater, so 1 in 125.

If he was uncircumcised, risk increases fivefold, so 1 in 25.

But who said it was single encounter? What if this was a regular partner? If they had sec 3 times a week, it's almost a certainty that she would be infected within 2 months.

Do you like those odds, Dave? Want to do a little experimenting yourself, and see how your moronic lightening and lottery analogies work out in the real world?

Somehow I doubt you'd have the stones to do anything but flap your gums, though.

Please furnish a link to your first statistic - which is total bullshit.

I would believe your number IF THE FUKKER WERE ALREADY KNOWN TO BE INFECTED. If the fukker is not known to be infected, the chances of infection are the number you mentioned, multiplied by the chances that an individual heterosexual male himself is infected, which is even less than 1/1250, particularly if that male is caucasian (which appears to be the case here).

Irish sweepstakes.

As always, you spread "the myth of heterosexual transmission of AIDS." The reason this case is noteworthy (aside from the incredible ignorance of the women) is that her infection, as she appears to have been infected, came in the face of astronomical odds.

Obviously the probabilities refer to transmission from someone who is HIV+. If both partners are HIV-, then the point would be moot.

The "myth of heterosexual transmission of AIDS [sic]". I'd like you to stand in the middle of a crowd of some of the tens of millions of heterosexual women and men who contracted HIV over the past 40 odd years, and see how they react to you saying that.
