Boston police investigate 2 backpacks, clear area

BOSTON (AP) — Police say they've taken a man into custody in connection with two unattended backpacks found at the Boston Marathon finish line.

Police spokesman Dave Estrada says the backpacks were discovered Tuesday evening, a year after two bombs in backpacks exploded at the end of the marathon and killed three people.

The bomb squad is checking the backpacks found Tuesday. Police have cleared the area. Trains are bypassing the nearby Copley Square station. The police department has tweeted asking people to avoid the area.

Survivors, first responders and relatives of those killed in last year's Boston Marathon bombing marked the anniversary Tuesday with tributes. Former Mayor Thomas Menino (meh-NEE'-noh) spoke at the nearby Hynes Convention Center.

The guy they caught (or whoever is guilty) should be hung by the nuts and beaten with a baseball bat.

Drag him down Boylston street, tied to the back of a Duck Boat, during the next Boston World Championship parade.

Police just detonated two backpacks. What an idiot, it was a lovely day and memorial service today, too bad he had to ruin it.

Apparently this particular moron fancies himself a "performance artist"....

Performance artist arrested after threat at Boston Marathon finish line -

A fresh Boston Marathon terror alert, which caused Bomb Squad officers to order an evacuation while two controlled explosions were carried out, was today being blamed on a twisted stunt by performance artist Kayvon Edson.

An area close to the marathon’s finish line was evacuated Tuesday night after a suspicious bag was left there by a man in all black who left yelling “Boston Strong!”

Police bomb squad experts were immediately called in and blew up two unattended bags “for precautionary reasons.”

One suspicious bag had been mistakenly left behind by a news crew covering Tuesday’s memorial event, but the other is believed to have been a prank by self-styled New York performance artist and fashion designer Edson. He told police it contained a rice cooker filled with confetti.

The 25-year-old was charged with disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace and possession of a hoax device.[None of that sounds particularly serious...Is that all they can charge this guy with? At the very least they ought to be hitting him with the bill for all the police time and equipment his "prank" consumed. Also, he didn't just "possess" a "hoax device" he put it in a public place. Shouldn't that be a separate and more serious charge?]

The controlled explosions came hours after the city marked the one-year anniversary of the tragic Boston Marathon bombings in which three were killed and more than 260 injured.

Witnesses first reported the suspicious bags and “a barefoot man acting strangely and repeatedly yelling Boston strong” around 7 p.m. Tuesday on Boylston Street.

Officers threw up a perimeter and evacuated the area before the first bag was detonated around 9pm, and the second at 9:30pm.

Edson’s Facebook page shows he studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and now designs his own line of clothing.

Yesterday he changed his Facebook cover image to a picture of Boston Marathon bombings suspect Dzokhar Tsarnaev which read, “Had a blast at the marathon!!!” He tagged the image with “Tamerlan Tsarnaev and Dzokhar Tsarnaev is innocent.”

Edson has also made several YouTube videos and is a blogger. In a lengthy, self-promoting video (below) he describes himself as a “fashion designer, an entrepreneur, a performance artist, a mental patient, [that one's certainly believable] a blogger/bloggerist, a jailbird, [hopefully he'll get a lot more experience at that] a college dropout and a drag queen.”

The lad seems just a tad self-absorbed...

I would suggest that for his next "performance" he strap some road flares and a bunch of wires to himself and wander into a police precinct station...

Should get a lot of laughs...

... my two Boston cousins are participating, once again, in this marathon. Let's hope that all the idiots, assholes, and haters understand that they will never be welcome to this great international event. Most importantly, Boston is no long mayor Kevin H. White's kind of town. Let freedom ring.

36,000 strong this year. Some will almost be finishing while others will still be able to look back and see the starting line.

Oh, and go get 'em Shalane Flanagan.

I very much doubt there will be any real attack attempts today, but I'm sorry to say I won't be a bit surprised if some sick asshole(s) call in bomb threats or deliberately leave suspicious packages lying around...

AND THE BoMa FEMALE WINNER IS...

... Kenya's Rita Jeptoo, 33... again!

Coincidentally, Jeptoo and President Obama were both born in the same town of Eldoret in western Kenya. And get this, Obama used to deliver the Kenyan Daily Post to the Jeptoo family until he moved to Hawaii in 1971 to live with his grandparents. Facts are often stranger than fiction.

Sounds like it was a great event, and went off without a hitch... :ok

And an American won the men's competition for the first time in 31 years (38 years old, no less):

A year later, Boston Marathon runners 'take back that finish line!'

(CNN) -- The first American man to win the Boston Marathon since 1983 crossed the finish line Monday, triumphant in a storied race that has become a national symbol of resiliency and determination.

Meb Keflezighi, 38, won the men's division with an official time of 2:08:37, according to the Boston Marathon's Facebook page.

The women's elite group began the 26.2-mile journey around 9:30 a.m. ET, and the elite men's group at 10. Waves of other runners started after them.

For Kenya's Rita Jeptoo, 33, it was a second consecutive victory. She again won the women's division with an unofficial -- and course record -- time of 2:18:57, according to the event's official Twitter account.

The average age of all Boston runners is in the 40s (and remember there are 36,000 runners), but the average age of the male elite field is 27. After 39, you move to the master's category. Meb was the oldest male winner in 70 years.

Shalane had a real chance - she cut her PR by over 3 minutes (which was set on the flat, fast Houston course), which is a huge leap. But Rita Jeptoo just had better legs yesterday. That's what happens in racing.

And it was a beautiful day. Just about every police office in Boston and the burbs was on duty, including all the State Troopers. The place to commit mayhem and madness was anywhere BUT Boston or the marathon course.
