A SERIAL petrol thief told magistrates his new business was thriving – as a specialist providing advice about saving money on fuel.

At Truro Magistrates' Court, Christian James Ford, 25, of Edward Street, Tuckingmill, Camborne, admitted six offences of getting fuel from a petrol station and leaving without paying at Tesco in Camborne, during November, December and January, and two others of stealing shopping from Tesco in March.

Alison May, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said part of the registration number of his car had been taken during one of the offences, which allowed the police to trace him. It was found that he had obtained petrol worth £260.17 all together, by filling up at a pump and driving off without paying. His theft in the store amounted to £50.

Ford told the police his job required a lot of driving he was unable to afford the cost.

He said in court he had been in between two different jobs and made a stupid mistake.

He was now self-employed after he and a friend set up a fuel-saving advice company.

He was fined £225 and £82 costs and surcharge, and told to pay £310.17 in compensation.
